Wheel Turning
Wheel Turning
Wheel Turning
Wheel turning operation is responsible for more flexible gantry movement of the RTG which include
cross gantry and 360 turn.
It uses an electric motor and a screw rod cylinder coupling to drive and actuate its movement, while
a pivot shaft is connected to distribute the force evenly on the other side of the leg.
It has proximity switches to indicate stop positions for 0, 16 and 90 degrees representing normal,
cross and 360 turn gantry operations.
On the ends of the screw rod cylinder, two proximity switches provide overtravel protection for
extend and retract directions.
Wheel turn request can be originated from local stations and from operator cabin.
Below is the specification of the wheel turning motor and motorized cylinder
MOTOR POWER 5.5KW
RATED LOAD 18T
START CURRENT 77.8A
RATED CURRENT 11.1A
MOTOR DUTY S3-60%
STROKE LENGTH 740MM
Note
The wheel turning motor as well as other crane auxiliary functions has alternative power
supply directly from the generator bypassing the inverter.
The wheel turning electric motor is of class S3 meaning it is an intermittent periodic duty
with cyclic duration factor 60%.
***Some safety practice interlock includes proximity switch gantry permit stop,
Other safety measures include the overtravel proximity switches that protect the cylinder during its
operations and gantry alarm and flashing signal lights that warn nearby personnel of crane
operation.
Some common faults were noticed during the 4 hours endurance test which include cylinder
overtravel proximity switch being triggered at normal stop distance as well as wheel turn motor
brake limit switch needing adjustment.
RTG BYPASS FUNCTIONS
In the month, I have completed a task to provide all the bypass functions on the RTG. This was
carried out successfully and satisfactorily. To achieve this, I first located the physical bypass buttons
on the RTG, then I perused the run permit networks for RTG functions and subsystems getting
information on the conditions required for functions and how the bypass was implemented to
overstep conditions without any safety compromises.
Note
The landed bypass button was remapped from safe height bypass in the E-room operation box, and
the tag hasn’t been corrected.
TECHNICAL REPORTING
Workshop Manager Festus emphasized the need of proper technical reporting practices to aid in
documentation of information and team record keeping. He aided with directions on how to
improve.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Workshop Manager Goodluck has emphasised the need of technical team members to possess
proper public speaking practices to aid in correct dissemination of information within the team as
well as to other LFT staff. He aided with tasks and directions on how to improve.

AREAS TO IMPROVE
Following this self-assessment and feedback gotten from the engineers and Workshop Managers
some areas I have seen the need for improvement include.
