Upon observing and evaluating the different prices of various items from
different retailers, we have noticed that there is somewhat of a difference on the
goods for sale in each location. The differences aren't necessarily on the larger scale
of things, but there is a difference to take note. An observation we took notice to
was the fact that the difference in prices never exceeded 5 pesos. It was observed by
our group that generally, prices are the same based on the current state of the
national economy. Sari sari stores tend to go by what the general prices on the
market currently are. They tend to not go beyond that, granted that they stay in line
with their competitors. In some remote areas, we have noticed that some of their
prices are slightly higher. Due to this, we have taken to accountability the transport
fees and other expenses given that in the first place, they reside in remote areas,
typically far away from the suburbs, hence the higher prices or the higher price
hikes. Another common trend is the expanding of inventory, in other words, a show
of force. Some sari sari stores like to add more inventory to their store because to
the typical consumer, it looks flashier. It attracts more because of the value that it
holds in its display. We have evaluated three items that were for sale in these stores
that we found interesting to study.
Namely, the surgical facemask, ice/ice water, and the Hansel biscuit (1 pack). All of
the items evaluated were bought for 1pax, or bought singularly. The biggest
differences of price were found in the Ice or Ice Water and the other products
remained constant in their prices. In store A, the product was priced at 2.50 pesos.
Whilst in stores B and C, they were marked at 3 and 5 pesos a piece, respectively. At
store A, the original prices of products; surgical facemask, ice/ice water, and the
Hansel biscuit (1 pack) are 0.52 centavos, 1.50 pesos, and 6.50 pesos. At store B, the
original prices of the same products (in order) are 0.48 centavos, 1.50 pesos, and 6.50
pesos, At store C, 0.52 centavos, 1.50 pesos, and 6.50 pesos. In the cases of stores A,
B, and C, they were all found to have relatively close prices. The reason being is to
stay in line with their competition and the general economy of the country. They
have to stay in line with the stereotypical prices in order to not get into trouble with
the law. After all, overpricing and hoarding is a crime punishable by our law. After
taking into consideration the different factors mentioned earlier like the transport
fees and whatnot, we have come to justify the prices given by the
examined/evaluated stores. As business students of the ABM strand, we have found
and come to understand the rationale as to why the prices are different. As a result,
we have better understood the different concepts on pricing that were taught to us
in our Business Math subject. We have come to appreciate this activity because it
has increased our learnings effectively.
