This week’s lecture is a continuation of Malaysian Contemporary Art. One of the factors
that influence the style of Malaysian Art is education. The westernization process benefited
greatly from the contribution of the British educational system. As a result, it was believed that
this educational system was responsible for the emergence of an artistic concept focused on
The third group is the Wednesday Art Group. The theme for this art group is landscape,
human figures, and still life. Basically, this group artwork show art as a medium of self-
expression. Their art style is post-impressionism, cubism, Picasso, impasto, and cartoon. This
group was called “Wednesday” because they always meet on Wednesday. There are a few
pieces of artwork from this group and one of them is “Rumah Rakit-Kuala Lipis” by Peter
Harris, 1956. He usually expresses his emotion by using warm colors. Next, “Bermain Biji
The fourth art group that emerged still in Kuala Lumpur is Angkatan Pelukis
Semenanjung. The art principle of this group is art as a medium of cultural values. They
focused on the human figure, portrait, and landscape. The style is mostly realistic. The first
artwork is “Potret Diri” by Mohd. Hoessein Enas, 1958. The next artwork is “Gadis Melayu” by
Mohd Hoessein Enas, 1959. Mohd Hossein Enas always portray the looks of Malay people in
his artworks.
Lastly, another chapter of the artwork is Batik Painting which was introduced in 1950.
The theme is landscape. The medium is batik or wax. The style is semi-abstract. The first
artwork is “Kampung Nelayan” by Chuah Thean Teng. The motif he portrays in this artwork is
geometrical and abstract. Next, “Fabrik Merah, Biru, Hijau” by Syed Saharuddin Syed Bakeri,
1969. Other than that, “Burung Dajal. this artwork is very interesting because of the title and
the motif he used is the motif of kain batik. In all his artwork, he used the same design and
motif in his canvas. The other artwork is “Tanpa Tajuk: Siri Dalaman” by Mastura Abdul
Rahman, 1990.
In conclusion, every art group has its own artwork style and principle. The artists from
each group portray their artwork in a great way. They mostly show the expression in their
