LEARNING PROCEDURES

A. Elicit
STUDENTS ARE GROUP INTO 4 WITH NAMES THEY CAN CONNECT TO THE WORD
“COMPUTER”.
THE GROUP WILL SAY THEIR GROUP NAME WHEN THEY WANT TO ANSWER THE
TEACHER’S
descriptions about the parts of the computer.
the description are as follows:
1. THIS IS LIKE THE HEAD OF A COMPUTER WHERE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE THINGS
YOU DO IN USING THE COMPUTER.
2. This is a small, movable device that lets you control a range of things on a
computer. Most types of this part have two buttons, and some will have a wheel in
between the buttons.
3. THIS IS A BOX WHERE SERVE AS THE BRAIN OF A COMPUTER.
4. THIS IS A DEVICE THAT ALLOWS YOU TO ENTER LETTERS, NUMBERS AND
SYMBOLS INTO YOUR COMPUTER.
Students will further answer the following questions briefly:
1. What are some parts of a computer that you know already?
2. HOW KNOWLEDGEABLE YOU ARE IN USING THE PARTS OF THE COMPUTER?
B. Engage
SHOWS THE PICTURES OF BASIC PARTS OF COMPUTER THROUGH THE POWERPOINT
PRESENTATION. LET STUDENTS FOCUS ON THE DEFINITIONS OF THE PARTS OF
COMPUTER.

HARDWARE
 THE MONITOR: THE MONITOR LOOKS LIKE A TELEVISION SCREEN AND IS
WHERE YOU SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING ON YOUR COMPUTER. BY USING SHADOWS
AND GRAPHICS WITH OVER A MILLION DIFFERENT COLORS, MUCH OF WHAT YOU
SEE WILL APPEAR 3-DIMENSIONAL. THINK OF THIS AS THE ‘FACE’ OF THE
COMPUTER.

 THE CPU (CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT): THE CPU HOUSES THE MACHINERY
THAT ALLOWS YOUR COMPUTER TO WORK. THINK OF THIS AS THE ‘BRAINS’ OF
THE COMPUTER. THIS COMPONENT LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT IN DESKTOPS AND
LAPTOPS, BUT IT WORKS THE SAME.

 THE KEYBOARD: THE KEYBOARD IS ONE OF TWO WAYS TO INTERACT WITH

YOUR COMPUTER. THE KEYS SHOULD MOSTLY MIMIC A TRADITIONAL
TYPEWRITER.

 THE MOUSE: THIS IS THE OTHER WAY TO INTERACT WITH YOUR COMPUTER.
MOST MICE HAVE TWO BUTTONS—A RIGHT AND A LEFT BUTTON—AND A
SCROLLING WHEEL.

Software
SOFTWARE CONSISTS OF PROGRAMS THAT WE USE TO INTERACT WITH THE
COMPUTER. YOU CAN’T PHYSICALLY. TOUCH SOFTWARE LIKE YOU CAN THE KEYBOARD,
BUT YOU CAN STILL INTERACT WITH IT. A WORD PROCESSING PROGRAM LIKE
MICROSOFT WORD IS A PIECE OF SOFTWARE THAT YOU COULD USE TO TYPE A
GROCERY LIST. GAMES THAT YOU PLAY ON YOUR COMPUTER OR YOUR PHONE ARE
ALSO CONSIDERED SOFTWARE—IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE WORK-RELATED.
SOFTWARE COMES IN TWO MAIN PARTS, THE OPERATING SYSTEM AND PROGRAMS.
 THE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS): IS LIKE THE FOUNDATIONAL SOFTWARE
NEEDED FOR EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE COMPUTER TO FUNCTION PROPERLY
(SOFTWARE, HARDWARE, ETC).

Windows, mac os, and linux (among others) provide a way for us to communicate
with the computer, save files, use the mouse and keyboard, and all the basic
operations of the computer. Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets also have
their own os.

METAPHOR: THE OS IS LIKE THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM. YOU DON’T

NEED TO THINK ABOUT BREATHING, OR ABOUT YOUR HEART BEATING, IT JUST
WORKS. THE OS CONTROLS THE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE COMPUTER SO YOU
DON’T HAVE TO.
 Show desktop – this is like the “home base” of os.

2
Note: students might be used to using a different os and that’s okay. The skills they learn
in this class can be carried over and applied to most computers.

 PROGRAMS: (ALSO KNOWN AS APPLICATIONS) ARE BUILT TO PERFORM A

SPECIFIC TASK – LIKE WRITE DOCUMENTS OR MAKE A SPREADSHEET AND THEY
“LIVE” WITHIN THE OPERATING SYSTEM.

C. Explore
TO GIVE STUDENTS THE IDEA ON HOW THEY WILL CLASSIFY THE PARTS OF A
COMPUTER AND KNOW THE USES OF A COMPUTER, THE TEACHER WILL SHOW
THE STUDENTS THE THINGS THAT THEY CAN DO USING THE COMPUTER.

Key Question: What are the things you can do in using a computer? Do you know
the uses of each part of the computer?

STUDENTS WILL PERFORM SOME BASIC ACTIVITIES WITH THE USE OF A

COMPUTER. THE ACTIVITY AIMS TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE THE
STUDENTS HAVE IN USING A COMPUTER.

NOTE: TELL THE STUDENTS THE BASIC THINGS THEY CAN DO USING THE COMPUTER.
YOU CAN USE A COMPUTER TO  TYPE DOCUMENTS, SEND EMAIL, PLAY GAMES, AND
BROWSE THE WEB. YOU CAN ALSO USE IT TO EDIT OR CREATE SPREADSHEETS,
PRESENTATIONS, AND EVEN VIDEOS.

THE TEACHER WILL ASSESS STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY PERFORMANCE BY CHECKING IF

THEY CAN FOLLOW INSTRUCTION PROVIDED IN USING A COMPUTER.

D. Explain
THE STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN AN ACTIVITY TO DISCUSS THE USES OF EACH
PART OF A COMPUTER BY GROUP. AFTER THE ACTIVITY, EACH GROUP WILL
PRESENT THE THINGS THEY KNOW ABOUT THE USES OF THE BASIC PARTS OF A
COMPUTER. THE TEACHER WILL GIVE INPUTS ON IMPORTANT MATTERS MISSED
BY THE STUDENTS. SHE WILL ALSO GIVE FEEDBACK ON THEIR ACTIVITY GROUP
PERFORMANCE.

E. Elaborate
The teacher will asks the students to state the one by one the parts of a
computer and describe them depends of what they had learned so far, also
give a demo on how to use it.

F. Evaluate
Students are evaluated in each phase of the lesson.

G. Extend

3
The teacher will give an assignment about “How to create a document using
your computer” and the students will try to do it at home and share in the
class what they learned on creating a document using a computer.
