INTRODUCTION
Accidents can be prevented by timely hazard identification, risk assessment and the determination and
implementation of appropriate control measures.
In this sense, this monograph seeks to provide the basic concepts on high-risk work, taking into
account the current regulations that indicate that we must differentiate and determine whether the
activity is high-risk, in order to contribute to the prevention of accidents and occupational diseases.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK
HIGH-RISK JOBS
These are activities that endanger the life and health of workers. This type of work means that the
tasks to be performed are considered difficult and dangerous.
● Work at heights.
● Work in confined spaces.
● Excavation and trench work.
● Hot work.
● Work with electrical energy
● Installation, operation and handling of equipment and radioactive materials.
Work at Heights
When working at heights or at different levels above one point eighty meters (1.80 m), a fall
prevention and arrest system shall be used, such as: anchor line, life line and safety harness.
● Chamois gloves.
● Safety shoes.
3. Considerations
● Do not work at heights without a PETAR.
● The harness and lifeline must be worn at all times.
● Do not work if you do not have a medical proficiency test for working at heights.
● It is not possible to work without an anchor line.
● Do not work without supervision at all times.
Hot work
Work involving the presence of open flame, sparks or heat release from welding work.
3. Considerations:
● You can enter the area if you have the complete epp.
● You cannot perform the activity without the specific epp.
● You can work in hot work if you have authorization.
1. Activity risk.
● Asphyxia
● Fire and explosion
● Intoxication
2. Specific PPE to be used:
● Safety helmet
● Safety glasses
● Safety coverall
● Safety gloves
● Safety shoes
● Self-contained breathing apparatus
3. Considerations:
● You may not enter a confined space without direct authorization from the
supervisor.
● You can enter a confined space only if I monitor the oxygen level and quality.
● You should not enter a confined space alone.
● The rescue rope must be used at all times.
1. Activity risk.
● Direct contact
● Indirect contact
● Electric arc
2. Specific PPE to be used:
● Safety helmet
● Safety glasses
● Protective clothing
● Safety gloves
● Safety shoes
● Self-contained breathing apparatus
● Electrical protective suit
8
3. Considerations:
● You may not perform work with electrical power without direct authorization from
the supervisor.
● You can do electrical work, as long as you apply the 5 golden rules.
● You should not enter a space with electrical voltage without communicating with
the respective area.
● Dielectric gloves must be worn at all times.
A trench is defined as a narrow excavation (relative to its length) made below the ground
surface. In general, the depth of a trench is greater than its width, but the width of a trench
(measured at the bottom) is not greater than 4.6 m.
1. Activity risk.
● Falling of personnel to the same level.
● Fall of personnel inside the excavation.
● Landslides of materials, earth, rocks.
● Entrapments.
3. Considerations:
● Direct contact
● Perform a daily inspection of the trench.
● Avoid approaching the edge without the necessary protection.
● Constantly check weather conditions.
● Rain and storms can increase the risk of accidents.
● Develop a checklist for periodic inspections.

GLOSSARY
A. Electric arc: It is a continuous high current electrical discharge flowing through an air gap
between conductors. It generates a very bright ultraviolet light, as well as intense heat. An
electric arc usually causes a short circuit.
B. Entrapment: Entrapment occurs when a person or part of his body is caught or snagged by
the moving mechanism of a machine, equipment, tool or by being caught between objects.
C. Safety harness: The safety harness may consist of bands, adjusters, buckles and other
elements, arranged and arranged in a suitable manner on a person's body to support him/her
during a fall.
D. Welding helmet: The welding helmet is an element of individual protection mandatory for
welding work, which is used to protect the eyes, face and neck from sparks, UV rays and heat
radiation produced when welding.
E. Hazard: Anything with the potential to cause harm to people, property, processes and the
environment.
F. Risk: It is the result of the combination of probability and consequence, generating as a result
the materialization of the hazard.
G. Excavation: man-made cut, cavity, trench or depression formed by the removal of earth.
H. Trench: a narrow excavation. The depth is greater than the width, but not more than 15 feet.
I. Shoring: structure that supports the sides of an excavation and protects against cave-ins.
