Assignment No. 2
Subject: Air pollution and control (17CV551) Sem: 5th Faculty name: Mr. Sadiq Date: 22/09/2019

1. How and in what manner the ELR and ALR affect the dispersion of an air pollutant into the atmosphere? In this
context, draw the various possible behaviours of the emitted plume and explain. Paste the coloured
photographs of different plume behaviours, those you have seen anywhere (at least 4 patterns).
2. Attach coloured photographs of the devices mentioned below, those you have seen anywhere, explain their
working.
a) Wind speed recorder
b) Wind direction recorder
3. Attach the coloured photographs of latest wind roses for Vijayapur, bengaluru and New Delhi. Describe each.
4. Draw the TYPE – 1 wind rose diagrams for the data given by regional pollution control board Vijayapur.
5. Suppose the following atmospheric altitude versus temperature data have been collected,
Altitude (m) Temperature (°C)
0 20
100 18
200 16
300 15
400 16
500 17
600 18
a) What would be the mixing depth?
b) How high would you expect a plume to rise if it is emitted at 21°C from a 100m stack and it rises at the dry
adiabatic lapse rate? Would you expect the plume to be looping, coning, fanning, or fumigating?
6. a) Mention the different industries where the cyclone separators are usually adopted.
b) Design a cyclone separator for any factory. (Reach out any factory and collect the necessary data)
7. Draw a neat sketch of typical cyclone separator and label the parts. Also, give the design proportions of the
various parts with respect to cyclone diameter. Enumerate the factors on which the collection efficiency of a
cyclone depends.
8. With a neat sketch, explain principle and construction of fabric filters. What are the factors affecting the
efficiency of fabric filters?
9. Distinguish between
a) Single-stage and two-stage precipitators
b) Pipe type and plate type precipitators
10. Attach the photographs of industrial units of cyclone separators, fabric filters, Wet scrubbers and Electrostatic
precipitators.
