WHAT IS A PHOTOGRAPH?
• A photograph is an image created using a camera.
• The image captured by a digital camera are composed of
picture elements called “pixels” which are tiny squares,
each with its own value representing color and intensity.
• One million pixels equal a megapixel.
• The more megapixels a camera is rated for, the higher
quality images that camera takes, but the more expensive
the camera is.
• Digital photography gives us the flexibility to digitally edit
those photos easily, efficiently and with some very cool
results.
PHOTO EDITING vs IMAGE MANIPULATION

• Photo editing is all about enhancements.

• Either a need for better brightness and contrast,
more saturation, a shift in focus, and optimization
by cropping.
• Image manipulation refers to modifying certain
image elements like removing unwanted
elements in the backdrop or change in facial
features.

REASONS FOR EDITING PHOTOGRAPHS

• Fix a mistake.
• Adjusting the brightness level of a dark photo.
• Using a blur effect to create a point of focus on a “busy” image.
REASONS FOR EDITING PHOTOGRAPHS

• Produce an artistic effect.

• Use certain effects to add or set the tone of the photograph.
PHOTO EDITING CONCEPTS
• Cropping
• This is essential in photo editing
because when done right, the subject
of the photograph stands out better.
• Cropping is a way of improving a
photograph by removing its unwanted
or unnecessary parts.
• When cropping, keep in mind a basic
rule of composition: the rule of thirds.
• This golden rule of photography divides
the image into thirds, horizontally and
vertically and then aligns the subject with
one of the intersecting lines.
PHOTO EDITING CONCEPTS
• Color Correction
• Basically, it is correcting
problems of the underlying
colors, making the whites
appear white, the blacks appear
black, and making sure that
everything is even.
• Color correction involves
adjusting the colors to make
them as accurate as possible.
PHOTO EDITING CONCEPTS
• Sharpening (or Softening)
• Sharpening enhances the
definition of edges in an image.
• When an image is sharper, there
is more contrast between pixels
• Softness, in its most basic sense,
is a lack of (or less) edge
definition and/or fine detail,
when compared with a "sharp"
image.
PHOTO EDITING CONCEPTS
• Resizing and Compression
• Size refers to the actual height
and width that your image will
be displayed as.
• Resolution refers to the number
of dots per inch (dpi) that
appear in your images final
form.
PHOTO EDITING CONCEPTS
• Resizing and Compression
• Image compression is the
process of encoding or
converting an image file in such
a way that it consumes less
space than the original file.
