Past simple: be
We use was / were /wasn’t / weren’t with an adjective to talk about what people were like
in the past.
With the subjects I / He / She, we use WAS in affirmative sentences and WASN’T in
negative sentences. WASN’T is the short form of WAS NOT.
Examples:
- I was/wasn’t shy when I was young.
- She was/wasn’t lazy when she was young.
- He was/wasn’t confident when he was young.

With the subjects We / You / They, we use WERE in affirmative sentences and WEREN’T in
negative sentences. WEREN’T is the short form of WERE NOT.
Examples:
- We were/weren’t untidy untidy when we were young.
- You were/weren’t unkind when you were young.
- They were/weren’t noisy when they were young.
• Were you shy when you were young? Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
• Was he/she untidy when he/she was young? Yes, he/she was. / No, he/she wasn’t.
• Were they kind when they were young? Yes, they were / No, they weren’t.
• Regular verbs: We add -d (if the *verb ends in -e), -ed (most verbs) or -ied (if the
**verb ends in consonant + y) to make the past simple form of the verb.
Examples: She moved house when she was five.
I started nursery school when I was one.
Other regular verbs:
*like-liked play-played watch-watched start-started **study-studied
• Irregular verbs: Irregular verbs DO NOT add -d, -ed or -ied. Most of them change in
the past simple form. You have to check and study the IRREGULAR VERBS LIST.
Examples: You got a pet when you were three.
They wrote a letter when they were eight.
Other irregular verbs (check the list):
get-got say-said have-had write-wrote tell-told
think-thought go-went see-saw eat-ate win-won

- Did you move house when you were five? Yes, I did / No, I didn’t.
- Did she write a letter when she was eight? Yes, she did / No, she didn’t.
