Agenda
2.1 Organic Molecule
2.1.1 Carbohydrates
2.1.2 Lipids
2.1.3 Proteins
2.1.4 Nucleic Acids
2.2 Inorganic Molecules
2.2.1 Water
2.2.2 Acids & bases
Acids
An acid is a chemical species that donates protons or hydrogen ions and/or accepts
electrons. Most acids contain a hydrogen atom bonded that can release (dissociate) to
yield a cation and an anion in water.

Bases
A base is a substance that can neutralize the acid by reacting with hydrogen ions. Most bases are minerals
that react with acids to form water and salts
Acids Bases
corrode metal taste bitter
burn skin feel slipper/soapy
taste sour turn red litmus blue

ACID/BASE STRENGTH
Measuring using pH scale
Range from 0-14
Lower Number = more acidic
Higher Number = more
basic alkaline substances
pH 7 is equal to neutral
Acids Bases
Weak Weak
Carbonic acid pH4 Calcium Carbonate

Strong Strong
Hydroclhoric Acid pH1 Sodium Hydroxide
Strong Acids and bases can
be combined to form a salt
