TITLE: INVESTIGATIVE PROJECT

OBSERVATION: John is obese and enjoys drinking powdered full cream milk

AIM: To determine which type of powdered milk (full cream, skim and low fat) contains the
lowest lipid content.

APPARATUS & MATERIALS:

APPARATUS MATERIALS

1 Beaker Distilled water

1 Spatula Sudan(III) reagent

1 Dropper Powdered low-fat milk

1 Glass rod Powdered full cream milk

1 Test tubes Powdered skimmed milk

1 Measuring cylinder

METHOD:

1. Using a measuring cylinder, pour 6cm^3 of distilled water into a beaker.


2. Using a spatula, place one semi-generous scoop of powdered low-fat milk into a beaker.
3. Stir the mixture thoroughly.
4. Pour the contents of the beaker into a test tube.
5. Using a dropper, add 8-12 drops of Sudan(III) reagent to the test tube.
6. Shake the test tube vigorously then record observations of the colour/ appearance of the
mixture.
7. Wash and rinse all apparatus used.
8. Repeat steps 1-7 using powdered skimmed milk instead of low-fat milk.
9. Repeat steps 1-7 using powdered full cream milk instead of low-fat milk.

minute amounts of pink in its solution.

Powdered low-fat milk The powdered low-fat milk showed some


amounts of pink in its solution.

Powdered full cream milk The powdered full cream milk showed large
amounts of pink in its solution.

Water Purple fluid, Sudan (III) reagent, stay on the


surface of the water.
