Pamagat: Excerpts from Magellan's Voyage Around the World

Paksa: Magellan’s Arrival in the Philippines

May-akda

Antonio Pigafetta was a Venetian scholar and adventurer. He took part in the expedition to the
Spice Islands commanded by explorer Ferdinand Magellan under the banner of Emperor Charles V, as
well as the subsequent trip around the world after Magellan's death in the Philippine Islands. During the
trip, he supported Magellan and kept a precise notebook, which subsequently helped him translate the
Cebuano language. It is the first written record of the language.

Pigafetta was one of 18 soldiers who completed the journey, returning to Spain in 1522 under the
command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, out of the approximately 240 who went out three years before.
These guys completed the world's first circumnavigation. Others rebelled and returned after the first
year. Much of what is known about Magellan and Elcano's expedition comes from Pigafetta's preserved
logbook.

In 1931, the Italian Navy named at least one warship after him, a destroyer of the Navigatori class.

Antonio Pigafetta wrote at least two books, both of which have survived:

- Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al mondo (1524-1525);

- Regole sull'arte del navigare (1524-1525)

Paunang Kaalaman ukol sa Paksa

Sintesis ng Binasang Akda

Here lies the Spaniards’ arrival to the lands of the Zamal on the 16th of March, year 1521 stretching
up to the battle of Magellan to Lapu-lapu’s people. It was narrated how Magellan was seemingly
conquering the ideologies and beliefs of the people residing in the islands through fronting acts of
kindness and honour through building foundations of friendship with the Kings and Chiefs of the island
through trading foreign merchandises and giving high regard to ones culture. Manipulation and deceit is
present as he is procifient and fluent in sweet talking by maximizing his wit to convince these people to
convert themselves against their own beliefs onto Christianity.

It led to a war between the Spaniards as Lapu-lapu held his ground and fought Magellan’s troops
despite the Don of the ship consistently convincing them that through believing in their God will have
them gain greater glory. It concluded with Lapu-lapu having the upperhand and Magellan conceding the
battle with his cowardly men.

Mga Bagay na Nangangailangan ng Paglilinaw

Giving light to what hindered me from understading the entirety of the archive is the unfamiliar and
hard to comprehend terminologies that was present in the readings. But for understanding its concepts
and the general gist of the reading is something I have understood with no difficulty.

Mga Bagong Bagay na Natutuhan sa Babasahin

As we delved deeper with better access to archives in depth, I have further learned about the events
that happened in vivid detail. I have attained the knowledge of what kind of ruling system was present
and used in the old times of the Philippines before it was conquered and how Magellan attempted to
subjugate the people of the island.
