People in the UK recycle as little as 27% of their
domestic waste, while, in some other European
countries, people recycle over 50% of the waste that
they produce at home. Most people do not realise
that 50% of the waste in their bin could be recycled,
and that the remaining 50% could be composted.
Most basic materials, including plastic, paper,
aluminium and glass, can be recycled. For example,
if you recycle a plastic bottle, you can save enough
energy to power a light bulb for three hours!
In the UK, 15 million plastic bottles are used every
day. So just imagine how much energy people would
save if all those bottles were recycled!
The average person in the UK uses nearly 40 kilos
of newspaper each year, and it takes 24 trees to make
one tonne of paper.
