Position Paper

A call to “Implementing a no Private Transport Policy for Two (2) days a week on Major Highways of
Manila” has been perennial amongst the government and the citizens due to heavy traffic. A developing
city such as Manila has upped the scale of automobiles around its roads and has extensive traffic due to
both private and transportation vehicles. But implementing a no private transport policy for two days a
week on major highways of Manila- in which I dare to support. Below are stated reasons of my argument.

First, oversupply of private vehicles, as stated by Dela Peña “Earlier this year, the transportation
department said private vehicles account for 32% of trips in Metro Manila. Travel by public buses –
which can carry around 60 passengers – accounts for only 14%.” Due to oversupply of cars but limited
road space results to extensive traffic among the roads of Manila. If government implements a no private
transport policy two days a week on major highways of Manila, it can be very beneficial amongst the
commuters and would also result to less traffic.

Second, cars are not a persons’ social status therefore; you don’t need to buy cars to update one’s social
status and just flaunt it when you want to. And so, implementation of a no private transport policy for two
days a week on major highways of manila should be imposed. As said by Dela Peña “It attributes the
dependency on private vehicles to the unreliable and chaotic public transit network and the perception
that owning a vehicle reflects one's social status.” And banning private transport vehicles for two days a
week is beneficial.

Lastly, pervasive traffic. As seen on a poster in Copenhagen “You are not stuck in traffic, you are the
traffic.” Lim said there are 2.5 million to 2.6 million registered vehicles in Metro Manila, comprising 30
percent of all registered vehicles in the country. But if a two day no private vehicle per week is
implemented it can lessen traffic by so much therefore, it must be modified.

Above are the reasons of my support to “Implementing a no Private Transport Policy for Two (2) days
week on Major Highways of Manila”. It should be implemented due to oversupply of vehicles, due to
improper flaunting of one’s car and yet again, should be implemented due to extensive traffic caused by
millions of registered vehicles around Manila.
