Newton’s Laws of Motion

▪ Summarizes the principles of dynamics in terms of three laws.

▪ Characteristics
▪ Fundamental
▪ Foundation of classical (Newtonian) Mechanics
▪ Cannot be derived from other principles
▪ Not Universal
▪ Modify at very small sizes (subatomic particles)
▪ Modify at high speeds (near the speed of light)

Fundamental Forces

General Physics 1 – Newton’s Laws of Motion Paulo M. Edrozo, RMicro

Types of Forces

▪ Force At-A-Distance
▪ Forces that are found between two particles separated in space.
▪ This creates a philosophical problem.
▪ However, we get around this by introducing the concept of force fields, or
simply field.
▪ Contact Forces
▪ Many forces that we encounter are exerted by objects in direct contact.
▪ Microscopically, these forces are electromagnetic in origin and are exerted
between the molecules of each object
