According to Zahid Amin, Ahmad Mansoor, Syed Rabeet Hussain And Faisal Hashmat (2016), Social
media is started when people start to communicate. Social means human society, as interference of
people& the groups and word media is the medium of expressions. Most of the forms of social media are
not digital. It generates a large number of innovations and Social Media is one of the biggest inventions of
technology, which is now most popular and widely used. We define Social Media as “technologies that
made social communication easy and enable discussions among its participants”. While in our study, the
word social media means a web-based mobile application that allows people or companies to make,
interact with, and share new user-generated or current material, in digital environment. Students are
consumers and producers of media. Thanks to the Internet and social web including Facebook, twitter,
blogs, Smart phones, and text messaging, most students increasingly live in a world where information is
access to communication technologies. For example, in 2010 as reports shows American teenagers about
73% of them use social networking sites, and 75% have a cell phone.
In their 2016 study, which is The Relationship of Social Media with the Academic Performance of
Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Students of Centro Escolar University Malolos, Tamayo
and Josan, Dela Cruz, S.G. G point out that generally, Social Media users largely are from Teens and
Generation Y (internet users age 18-32), according to the survey conducted by Pew Internet & American
Life Project entitled Generations Online in 2009. They are the most likely groups to use the internet for
entertainment and for communicating with friends and family. These younger generations are
significantly more likely than their older counterparts to seek entertainment through online videos, online
games, and virtual worlds, and they are also more likely to download music to listen to later. Internet
users ages 12-32 are more likely than older users to read other people’s blogs and to write their own; they
are also considerably more likely than older generations to use social networking sites and to create
profiles on those sites. Younger internet users often use personal blogs to update friends on their lives,
and they use social networking sites to keep track of and communicate with friends. Teen and Generation
Y users are also significantly more likely than older generations to send instant messages to friends. By a
large margin, teen internet users’ favorite online activity is game playing; 78% of 12–17-year-old internet
users play games online,4 compared with 73% of online teens who email, the second most popular
activity for this age group. Online teens are also significantly more likely to play games than any other
generation, including Generation Y, only half (50%) of whom play online games.
Social networking has become common in today’s society especially among adolescents and young adults
and continues to grow in popularity. These activities occur among people who already know each other
personally like classmates as well as those who have never met in person. Increased utilization of
computers and cell phones to communicate, tasks that have historically required interpersonal skills and
face-to-face interaction, may be altering the means in which young people attain and practice skills that
are necessary to function in their daily lives (Bravo, Brandon, 2018).

Owusu Boateng R. & Amankwaa A. (2016) said that Social media has been accepted by higher
institution making it a platform where students connect with their instructors, fellow students and other
higher authorities across the board. Most deliberations of social media being perceived as either on the
very straightforward or the very philosophical, emergent numbers of educationalists exploring and
aspiring in this field are beginning to consider the possible significance and likely implications of social
media for education practice and provisioned specially in terms of higher education.
A student can also study while they are engaged in a social media since they can converse about previous
lectures and assignments given to them. Aside from that, a learner can click various search engines or
open various tabs while currently engaged in a group conversation over the internet. Passing and transfer
of data can be readily obtained with copy and paste commands. However, quality of learning and
retention may be different than that of traditional method. (Cabral A., Gonda J., Suayan, Ramil J. Jr.,
Manalo G., Mendoza V.A., Escabel E., 2016).
The study of Magmanlac Q., Reyes C., Boongaling L., Caiga B., (2018) shows that the students may
utilize the social media wisely and vigilantly in the practice of their course to have an effective cognitive
and social skills. The plan of actions may be considered to address the effects of social media on
Communication students.
In their 2016 study they examine the impact of social media on student’s performance in Malaysia.
Mensah and Nizam used the Pearson’s correlational coefficient and correlated with the academic
performance of the students. The paper used both descriptive and explanatory research design. It is found
that positive and significant relationship between friends-people connections and students’ academic
performance. It is concluded that social media platforms have a significant impact on the student’s
academic performance and they are taught with the time management to determine success or failure of
the students.
Emeka & Nyeche (2016) did a study on the Impact of Internet Usage on Academic performance of
undergraduate students using University of Abuja, Nigeria as a case study. Survey method using
questionnaires as the instrument for data collection was adopted. The result revealed that the use of
Internet is a beneficial tool to students and enhances their skills and capability which will assist them in
studies and professional life.
Social media usage for academic purposes is high among medical and paramedical students. Students
benefit from social networking and are conscious of its positive as well as negative influence on
interpersonal relations. (Lahiry S., & Kar R.G. 2019).
Raut & Patil (2016) highlights how social media influenced education sector the study revealed various
positive and negative impacts of social media on education or students. It also highlighted measure to
minimize the negative impact of social media on students’ academic performances such as; moderating
their access to social media sites, reducing the amount of time spent on social network sites.
Gilbert (2018) tried to analyze the impact of social media on student’s academic performance. The study
presupposes that the students use social media for communicating and study. On average students spent at
least an hour daily in social media. It would have both positive and negative impact on their academic
performance. 60 students were taken as sample for the data acquiring, whereas get the accurate sample
size Solving’s formula was adopted. It was found that the primary motives of the students were to chat
with their friends, spend leisure time with own relaxation. Around 20% of time is being used for social
media purpose. It was also admitted by them that use of social media has influenced their life and few
stated that there’s no such influence. It was concluded that free time of the students is totally acquired by
social media where things appear to be more interesting than that of the mentor’s lecture.
Zahid (2019) tried to investigate the impact and relationship between social media and academic
performance of the student. To resolve the misconception regarding social media are to identify the
problems of individuals using social media. Various factors determine the academic performance of
students but at this modern age social media is worth mentioning to be the most popular factor. The paper
concluded with the positive aspect of usage of social media by the students as it has helped them in
exchanging and generating new ideas and students being an asset of any country play a pivotal role in
social development.
Social networking sites such as WeChat which is predominant in china, LinkedIn and the flipped
classroom such as schoology are now being used by universities as alternative spaces in which students
can adapt to the university lifestyle through interacting online with peers and faculty. Certainly, many
universities now maintain profiles and groups on social networking sites such as Facebook, where
students and faculty can interact, share resources and express learner voice (Boateng R. 2016).
Mendoza V. (2016) said that saving a lot of time because of easy access and transfer of data due to
collaboration with others using social networking sites was the observed effects of social media to
academic performance. Effects of social media to academic performance is not affected by the
respondents‟ profile.
Social media provides an easy and effective way to communicate, socialize and improve student’s
cognitive skills. Through utilizing the social media, the students can acquire information and learning that
will help them in their daily activities. It can practice the student’s social skills by communicating with
other people online. Social media is also a medium that the students can use to know about the latest
happenings around the world. It can truly help the students in developing their participation in school and
improve their socialization as well. It also provides them the freedom to express and make the world
much united. (Magmanlac, Q. 2018).
In their 2018 study, Reyes C. A., explained that social media can help the students to become more
engage in their program. Social media help them in their studies like researching answers or getting
information and ideas for their academic tasks or can use social media to communicate with their talents.
Most mass communication student’s requirements in their course are application or practical. Like writing
scripts for news, films and advertisements and making print, audio, or video productions in radio,
television, print, and internet media. These are done for the students to be in hand on the field they will
choose to work in future.

Social media is also important in improving the AB Communication student’s oral and writing
communication and their creative thinking skills in creating concepts and designs. This can help them to
contribute in the development of their chosen field after college in regards of uplifting Filipino culture
and contributing to development of society through projects they are sharing online (Caiga, B. 2018).
Social media usage for academic purposes is high among medical, paramedical, and nursing students in
our institution. Most students benefit from social networking on academic front and are conscious of its
positive as well as negative influence on social and interpersonal relations. Hence, teaching curriculum
must incorporate learner-centric modules through social media for greater impact on student well-being.
(Hazra, A. 2019).
The results of Kimiafar, K. 2020 study showed that the social networks can play an effective role in
educating medical students and improve students' motivation for learning. However, the use of these
technologies also brings problems and challenges.
Students are not always have Media literacy skills that can help them to effectively analyze, understand,
And evaluate new forms of information and make smart decisions about its Quality and uses.The use of
social media has become comprehensive and currently, the most popular social media plate forms are
Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn and Google +, Skype and smart phones. Facebook user profiles
allow the user to communicate information with each other and allow users to build and maintain
relationships and encourage others to be a part of a community among students of colleges online social
websites become popular. (Amid,Z. 2016)
