II. Questions:

1. How would you diagnose the state of the Philippine society in this present period
relative to what and how Rizal had thought about these two principles namely;
nationalism and patriotism?
Answer: 5-10 sentences only

Philippine society nowadays has a lot of problems, such as poverty and

unemployment. This is relative to what and how Rizal had thought about those two
principles which are the nationalism and patriotism because it was not only his
country that he wanted to be in but also his own country. I think that Filipinos have
a very strong sense of nationalism and patriotism. According to Rizal's nationalism
is of the inclusive, caring kind. This he spelled out in the aims of La Liga Filipina;
mutual protection in every want or necessity, defense against all violence and
injustice, and encouragement of instruction, agriculture, and commerce.
Nationalism desires unity by their way of a cultural background, including language
and heritage. Patriotism shows love country and willingness to sacrifice for it by
their values and beliefs. It is important for us to understand that we cannot live
without our nation's national identity. Nationalism is not only about the national
pride, but also about its importance as a symbol of unity among people.
Nationalism is a very important part of our society because it represents the unity
between different people.
2. Identify sociological attitudes or behaviors that the Filipinos of today in the
Philippines have and have lived up that contribute or destroy these two principles.
(Provide five for each)
Answer: 5-10 sentences only.

The sociological attitudes or behaviors that the Filipinos of today in the Philippines
have and lived up that contribute the principle nationalism are the following; first,
Filipinos show willingness to learn about the country’s culture and practices, they
respect them and be happy to practice them because this is important to show that
you love your country you have to appreciate the most practiced thing in the
country and that is the culture of the people. Second, learn to speak your own
language, yes... English is the most dominant and used language but you shall
never forget your native language, because language is something only people in
your country understand and it’s very unique and is also one of the distinctive
characteristics of every country. Third, we should adore everything made in the
Philippines and learn to promote it and share it to others. Fourth we should be
proud that we have our very own local movies, tv shows, movie stars, singers,
printed books and many more and this is something that we can share to others
and let them experience what it is like in the Philippines. Lastly, respect the national
anthem and sing it with pride, make sure that you really mean all the words you
are saying because the national anthem is one of the unique thing every country
has and if you don’t sing it properly how is that showing care for you country. For
patriotism Filipinos attitudes and behaviors first, stand proud for every Filipino
achievement. Second, patronize and support our own products the local
community. Third, love our family and our neighbors. Fourth, respect everyone and
value our traditions. Lastly, be productive citizens.

3. Based on how these two principles being explained in the reading article, how
would you evaluate the qualifications of the presidentiables in the up-coming May
election in our country? Specify one presidentiable candidate as your reference for
evaluation.
Answer: 5-10 sentences only.

For me, VP Leni Robredo qualifies the two principles because she has
spearheaded programs under the Office of the Vice President (OVP). As of
January 2022, her flagship anti-poverty program Angat Buhay has benefitted
622,000 families in 223 cities and municipalities across the country since she
assumed office in 2016. P520 million worth of aid has been mobilized for the
program, mostly from donations by the private sector. The OVP under Robredo
has partnered with 372 organizations in the implementation of Angat Buhay. The
Angat Buhay program focuses on six key advocacy areas, namely: public
education, rural development, food security and nutrition, women empowerment,
universal healthcare, and housing and resettlement. During the COVID-19
pandemic, the OVP under VP Robredo provided free shuttle services for pandemic
frontline workers, swab tests, telehealth services, and raised funds for relief
operations across the country. Also, during the Marawi siege, VP Robredo called
for unity as government troops engaged in a firefight against the Maute group in
Marawi, and she organized donations and directed relief operations for the victims.
She then visited wounded soldiers in Iligan to give support and contributions.
Robredo respects President Duterte's implementation of martial law in the whole
of Mindanao as a way to combat terrorism, but has requested measures to ensure
that the implementation would not resemble the "abuses and violations" during
Ferdinand Marcos' implementation of Proclamation No. 1081.
