Unit 5: Patterns and Relations - Polynomials


Grade 9 Mathematics
PR05 Students will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of polynomials (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to
2).

PR06 Students will be expected to model, record, and explain the operations of addition and subtraction of polynomial expressions,
concretely, pictorially, and symbolically (limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to 2).

PR07 Students will be expected to model, record, and explain the operations of multiplication and division of polynomial expressions
(limited to polynomials of degree less than or equal to 2) by monomials, concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.

Modeling Polynomials:
● Define components of a polynomial: term, constant term, degree, coefficients, monomial, binomial,
trinomial (anchor chart)

10 x2).
● Have students model polynomial expressions using algebra tiles.
● Activity: Work in pairs - model your partner's polynomial expression using algebra tiles.
