Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks : 100

Instruction : Answer all questions from Part A and any one question from each Module of Part B. PART A 1. Explain the different losses occurring in a DC machine. 2. Discuss how armature reaction affects flux distribution in a DC machine ? 3. Derive the torque equation of a DC motor. 4. Explain why DC series motor is more suitable for electric traction ? 5. Develop the equivalent circuit of a single phase transformer. 6. Derive the emf equation of an alternator. 7. Describe the torque requirements of a traction motor and hence suggest a motor. 8. Explain with the help of necessary diagrams the production of rotating magnetic field in 3 phase Induction motors. 9. Explain the principle of operation of single phase stepper motor ? 10. What are the characteristic features of heating elements ? PART B Module I 11. a) Explain the nature of open circuit characteristics of a DC shunt generator and describe an experiment to plot it. 10 (104=40 Marks)

b) A short shunt compound generator supplies a load current of 440 Amps at 250 Volts. The armature, series and shunt field resistances are 0.1, 0.05 and 100 ohms respectively. Find the induced voltage of the generator. 10

12. a) Describe a suitable method for determining the efficiency of a DC series motor.

b) A 250 V shunt motor on no load runs at 1000 rpm and takes 5A. The field and armature resistances are 250 ohms and 0.25 ohms respectively. Calculate the speed when the motor is loaded such that it takes 41A if the armature reaction weakens the field by 3%. 10 Module II 13. a) Explain how the efficiency and losses in a transformer can be found out from OC and SC tests. 10

b) A single phase transformer has rating of 100 kVA, 6000/400 Volts, 50Hz. The core loss of the transformer is 600 Watts. The primary and secondary resistances are 0.2 ohm and 0.001 ohm respectively. Calculate the efficiency of the transformer at i) full load and ii) half full load at a power factor of 0.8 lagging. 10 14. a) Explain the principle of operation of a synchronous motor ? Discuss one starting method for this motor ? 10 b) Discuss the methods of speed control and braking in traction motors ? Module III 15. a) Develop the equation for the torque developed in a three phase Induction motor and hence draw and explain the torque slip curve. 10 b) Draw the circle diagram for a 20 Hp, 400 Volts. 50 Hz, 3 phase, star connected Induction motor from the following test data (line values) : No load test 400 V, 9A, Cos 0 = 0.2. Blocked rotor test 200 V, 50 A, cos s = 0.4. From the circle diagram, find the line current and power factor at full load. 16. a) With a neat diagram, explain the connections, operation and applications of a universal motor ? 10 10 10
