Tabla - is a pair of 2 drums originating from India and is played with the hands. It
is an essential percussion instrument within Indian Classical Music, and is
performed in the form of solos as well as accompaniment with other instruments,
singing, and dance.
Harmonium - also called a "melodeon", "reed organ" or "pump organ", is a
keyboard instrument that is a lot like an organ. It makes sound by blowing air
through reeds, which are tuned to different pitches to make musical notes.
Members:
Tahir Faridi Qawwal - A 35-year-old originally from a small town in Nova
Scotia, Canada. As a teenager, he studied Indian classical music with tabla
maestro Harjeet Seyan Singh in India. Every year from June to November,
Tahir teaches and leads Fanna-Fi-Allah across the United States. He sings
and plays the tabla and harmonium.
Aminah Chishti Qawwal - Also known as Jessica Ripper. Was the first ever
female qawwali tabla player, originally from Ashland, Oregon.
Salim Chishti –A vocalist and is well-known for his pitch purity and gamak
taans. He has spent years honing his classical vocal skills with the famed
dhrupad singers, The Gundecha Brothers.
Ali Shan - Has a qawwali clap and chorus that can go from village to
village. He is deeply committed to the group and also learns the rabab
with Afghan Ustad Humayoun Sakhi.
Jahangir Baba - H as been a member of the ensemble for over 15 years. In
addition to performing qawwali, he is also heavily involved in the Bhajan
and Ghazal genres.
