CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

A. Background of the Study

Today’s internet has taken a firm place in people’s lives. It is difficult to

imagine a young man who at least once a day did not check for updates in social

networks and did not leaf through the news lines. The modern reality requires us to

stay in touch and keep abreast of the latest news and trends. However, does this trend

affect the performance of student?

Social Networking sites are termed to as web based services that give an

opportunity to individuals to create their own personal profile with the choice of their

own list of users and thereby connect with them in an public forum that provides them

with features such as chatting, blogging, video calling, mobile connectivity and

video/photo sharing. People spend more than usual hours on social networking sites to

download pictures, browse through updates seek entertainment and chat around with

friends to keep themselves connected to one another. These sites have held an

addiction to the youth wherein they find it difficult to concentrate on their work and

prefer logging in and jumping across one site to another. Some have derived benefit

out of these sites whereas some have become academically challenged by the use of

these websites. Individuals have set their own limits as to when and when not to

access these websites but we witness very few out of the lot who does not access or

make use of these sites at all.

According to scientist, social networks are specially dangerous for teenagers,

as they form a false impression that love and friendship are easy to conquer and just

as easy to destroy. In addition, young people are informed with the fast stream of
internet life, the truth may appear to be excessively dull, and they can have a go at,

making unwise activities. Some are supporters of the use of social network. They

claim that the latter provide access to knowledge and help students quickly exchange

information. Others think that students’ use social media primarily to communicate

about everything except studies and that they only distract students from the learning

process. The use of social media by students helps to have access to basic information

as quick as possible.

Evaluating the amount of research that surrounds the usage of social

networking sites in the education system, it is important to determine whether or not,

have these sites led to any impact on student engagement and achievement.

students

C. Research Questions

This research paper aims to find out the positive and negative impact of social

networking sites on the students of Aurora Senior High School (ASHS). Specifically

it sought to answer the following:

1. How does the time spent in social networking sites relate with the students’

academic performance?

2. How does the type of social networking site relate with the academic

performance of students?

3. Is there a relationship between social media and academic performance?

D. Hypothesis

H O - There is no significantly impact of social network on academic

performance.

H a - There is significantly impact of social network on academic performance.

E. Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the factors to be considered by the student in dealing

with social networks. This study was pursued for it has considered as one of the

factors leading to the society.

This research will be conducted using survey on June, 2019 to October 2019 at

Aurora Senior High School, Ballesteros, Aurora, Isabela. This study will no longer

discuss other matter of social networks and also the cases and issues including social

networks.

F. Significance of the Study

This findings provides the benefits and ideas to help others. To give some

possible solution to the person who having the positive and negative impact of social

networks.

Teenagers- this research paper would be able to help to carefully choose

social networking sites to be used. They can be guided in using social networking

sites to fit in. they need to critically think where they should go and in what way they

wanted to be. This research paper aims to help teenagers because they are the one who

are being affected with this issue.

Parents- Parents have the idea of the issue what their child is going through.

They can be able to have the idea of the proper ways of guiding their children so that

teenagers would be able to take chances of doing right things together with their

parents.

Teachers- This research may help teachers to determine whether their

students is having positive or negative impact of social networks. In this research

teacher may have an idea to help their students to avoid the effects of social networks.

Future Researcher- This can be a source of information for future

researchers especially this study is widely discuss yet, society is not really aware and

conscious about this issue. Researchers can be a way to let people know the

importance to having knowledge about social media.

Researchers- this study may help the researchers themselves in understanding

the impact of social networking sites.

G. Definition of Terms

Academic performance- it is a branch of learning that elaborate the reading,

writing and analyzing skills of a student.

Blogging- is different from vlog because if we speak about blog it talks about

words while vlog is ' bout videos Blog can be manipulated by someone who share

something in public.

Cybercrime- a crime that can be process on social media. Can take

disadvantages in people by their looks, personality, and etc. Cybercrime is literally

danger it can your life ruined.

Educational system- it refers in public schooling and commonly to

kindergarten through high school programs. It includes all institution which are

concerned with the education of children, young people and adults.

Entertainment- is a form of activity that holds the attention and interest of an

audience, or gives pleasure and delight. It can be an idea or a task, but is more likely

to be one of the activities or events. Specifically for the purpose of keeping an

audience's attention.

Networking-the action or process of interacting with others to exchange

information and develop professional or social contacts. The skills of networking,

bargaining and negotiations.

Professional life- it’s a status of a person.

Social media- is the one way to take our lives to be updated.

Students- who use the social media to search an important details.

Specifically for the purpose of keeping an audience's attention.

Teenager- is other term for Adolescent. At this stage the required age is 13 to

19 where you are being developed to become more responsible in the future. Teenager

is the term for a person who is undergoing the teenage state or adolescent state in

which involved to the changing of physical, psychological, emotional understanding

of a person.
CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the literature, studies and articles relevant to the

understanding of the present study.

The social impact of research has usually been analysis through the scientific

outcomes produced under the auspices of the research. The growth of scholarly

content in social media and the use of altmetrics by researchers to track their work

facilitate the advancement in evaluating the impact of research. However, there is a

gap in the identification of evidence of the social impact in terms of what citizens are

sharing on their social media platforms. This article applies a social impact in social

media methodology (SISM) to identify quantitative and qualitative evidence of the

potential or real social impact of research shared on social media, specifically on

Twitter and Facebook. (C. Pulido, G. Sama, T. Martí, & R. Flecha, 2018)

They define the social impact coverage ratio (SICOR) to identify the

percentage of tweets and Facebook posts providing information about potential or

actual social impact in relation to the total amount of social media data found related

to specific research projects. They selected 10 projects in different fields of

knowledge to calculate the SICOR, and the results indicate that 0.43% of the tweets

and Facebook posts collected provide linkages with information about social impact.

However, their analysis indicates that some projects have a high percentage (4.98%)

and others have no evidence of social impact shared in social media. Examples of

quantitative and qualitative evidence of social impact are provided to illustrate these

results. A general finding is that novel evidences of social impact of research can be

found in social media, becoming relevant platforms for scientists to spread

quantitative and qualitative evidence of social impact in social media to capture the

interest of citizens. (C. Pulido, G. Sama, T. Martí, & R. Flecha, 2018)

The article of A. Kumpel, V. Karnowski and T. Keyling (2015) provides a

review of scientific, peer-reviewed articles that examine the relationship between

news sharing and social media in the period from 2004 to 2014. A total of 461 articles

were obtained following a literature search in two databases (Communication & Mass

Media Complete [CMMC] and ACM), out of which 109 were deemed relevant based

on the study’s inclusion criteria. In order to identify general tendencies and to uncover

nuanced findings, news sharing research was analyzed both quantitatively and

qualitatively. Three central areas of research—news sharing users, content, and

networks—were identified and systematically reviewed. In the central concluding

section, the results of the review are used to provide a critical diagnosis of current

research and suggestions on how to move forward in news sharing research.

Social networks are one of the most used communication methods of today's

world. Their use in different fields has been examined in several research studies.

This study aims to examine the effects of social media on student's behaviors which

will mainly focus on Facebook. Whether there is a positive relationship between

confidence, social media participation and social media related behaviors will also be

assed with regard to using Facebook. In order to collect the primary data, a general

scanning model was used to observe attitudes of high school students. The

participants chosen were 362 high school students from level 9 to 12. The findings

highlight that Facebook is used for communication entertainment and sharing news,

pictures and songs. In addition, their Facebook profile picture is alone and students

were aware that swearing is considered a form of misconduct, which is a good sign.

The study also indicates that students were aware of protecting their social identity as
their Facebook shares are not public. Furthermore, they respect privacy as they do not

use their friend's Facebook account. (Tugberk Kaya, 2016)

The article of Yasmin Hashem (2016) it is crucial to determine the impact of

social media on the academic performance of students. Technology is booming

rapidly from year to year, and the younger generations are the ones caught in this

rapid change. Questionnaires were distributed through Facebook and E-mails, to find

out whether student academic performance is impacted by social media or not. The

findings demonstrate that there is no relationship between social media and academic

performance; this is clearly projected in their overall grade average.

The social media has witnessed an exponential growth in the new millennium.

And the present information age the social media marketing has become a part of

doing business. Marketing with Facebook has been hot for quite a long time but

recently more and more companies have been using Twitter and other social media

for marketing. Social media marketing, or SMM, is a form of internet marketing that

implements various social media networks in order to achieve marketing

communication and branding goals. Social media marketing primarily covers

activities involving social sharing of content, videos, and images for marketing
purposes, as well as paid social media advertising. According to Hubspot, 92% of

marketers in 2014 claimed that social media marketing was important for their

business, with 80% indicating their efforts increased traffic to their websites. And

according to Social Media Examiner, 97% of marketers are currently participating in

social media—but 85% of participants aren’t sure what social media tools are the best

to use. With this into mind present research work focus on the Relevance of Social

media in marketing and advertising. The study conducted based upon the data

collected from the literatures and from other multiple secondary sources of evidence.

After doing the extensive literature survey and reading books and other support

material it was found that social media is increasing its horizon and motivation large

number of consumers as well as marketers and manufacturers to use it as an important

source of important dissemination and conformation. There is need to promote these

program and make them aware and prepare them to face the challenge of change. To

keep pace with the flow of the global economic challenges, it is needed to develop

foresightedness and take initiatives in managing the social media program and

enhance its relevancy. Some of the suggestions based on the study is also presented in

the paper. Key words: Social Media Marketing (SMM), Facebook, Tweeter,

LinkedIn, social media program, etc. (Dhani Shanker Chaube, 2016)

Based on a case study of Dominik Hagmann (2018) the paper analyses the

possibilities of social media as a tool for science communication in the context of

information and communication technology (ICT) usage in archaeology. Aside from

discussing the characteristics of digital archaeology, the social networking sites (SNS)

Twitter, Sketchfab, and ResearchGate are integrated into a digital research data

dissemination tool. As a result, above-average engagement rates with few impressions

were observed. Compared with that, status updates focusing on actual fieldwork and
other research activities gain high numbers of impressions with below-average

engagement rates. It is believed that most of the interactions are restricted to a core

audience and that a clearly defined social media strategy is obligatory for successful

research data dissemination in archaeology, combined with regular posts in the SNS.

Additionally, active followers are of highest importance.

Avoiding a major source of system and software project failures by finding

more non-technical user friendly methods of system definition and evolution has been

a significant challenge. Another challenging problem, an outcome of the system

definition process, is selecting system and software requirements to implement in a

particular product or release. Business stakeholders strive to maximize return on

investment by selecting the most valuable requirements for implementation. Deciding

on the requirements to be selected entails a great deal of communication and

coordination amongst the stakeholders to ascertain the priorities of the individual

requirements. In this dissertation I present two separate but interconnected ideas:

social networking inspired negotiation and a two-step prioritization approach. With

the advent of social networking and popularity of Facebook and Gmail, I developed a

radically different way for collaborative requirements management and negotiation

based on the WinWin negotiation model. (Nupul Kukreja, 2015)

In this chapter we first introduce language revitalization, social media, and

knowledge management systems. This is followed by a discussion on how social

media driven knowledge management systems can be leveraged to preserve, curate,

transmit, discover and ultimately revitalize endangered languages. Secondly we

compare and synthesize literature on existing language preservation and knowledge

management systems with a particular focus on their support for societal

collaboration. Finally, this chapter proposes the design and implementation of “Save
Lingo”, a holistic socially driven knowledge management system for preserving and

revitalizing endangered languages. We instantiate and validate the system in the

context of Te Reo Māori, which is spoken by the indigenous population of New

Zealand. (Asfahaan Mirza & David Sundaram, 2017)

Research has identified numerous mechanisms through which perceived social

isolation and lack of social support negatively impact health. Little research attention

has been dedicated to factors that influence the development of social networks,

which have the potential to decrease perceptions of social isolation and provide social

support. There is mixed evidence concerning the availability of supportive social

networks for Latinos in the US. This study explores trauma-exposed Latina

immigrants’ experiences of social isolation in the US and its perceived causes.

Twenty-eight Latina immigrant women participated in an interview about traumatic

experiences. Informal help seeking and the availability of friendships in the US were

also queried. Frequent comparisons between experiences in their home countries and

in the US shaped the emerging themes of social isolation and lack of social support.

Women reported feeling lonely, isolated, closed-in, and less free in the US due to

family separation and various obstacles to developing and maintaining relationships.

Socioeconomic, environmental, and psychosocial barriers were offered as

explanations for their limited social networks in the US. Understanding experiences of

social isolation as well as barriers to forging social networks can help inform the

development of social support interventions that can contribute to improved health

among Latinos. (A. Mendoza, F. Gonzales & A. Serrano, 2014)

Online social networks (OSNs) have permeated all generations of Internet

users, becoming a prominent communications tool, particularly in the student

community. Thus, academic institutions and faculty are increasingly using social
networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to connect with current and

potential students and to deliver instructional content. This has led to a rise in

questions about the impact of OSN on academic performance and the possibility of

using it as an effective teaching tool. To learn more about the impact on academic

performance, we conducted a survey of business students at a large state university.

Survey results were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results

revealed a statistically significant negative relationship between time spent by

students on OSN and their academic performance. The time spent on OSN was found

to be heavily influenced by the attention span of the students. Specifically, we

determined that the higher the attention span, the lower is the time spent on OSN.

Further, attention span was found to be highly correlated with characteristics that

predict or influence student behavior, such as their perceptions about society’s view

of social networking, their likes and dislikes of OSN, ease of use of OSN, etc. (J. Paul

& J. Cochran, 2012)

According to D. Power & G. Wren (2011) information technology continues

to provide opportunities to alter the decision-making behavior of individuals, groups

and organizations. Two related changes that are emerging are social media and Web

2.0 technologies. These technologies can positively and negatively impact the

rationality and effectiveness of decision-making. For example, changes that help

marketing managers alter consumer decision behavior may result in poorer decisions

by consumers. Also, managers who heavily rely on a social network rather than expert

opinion and facts may make biased decisions. A number of theories can help explain

how social media may impact decision-making and the consequences.

The impact of social media (SM) or new media (NM) in our education

institutions and society today are undoubtedly overwhelming. Students in the

developed and developing countries are becoming more addicted to social media and

its applications for various reasons. These reasons can lead to change in social and

personal lifestyle both academically and off-academic. This study aims to assess the

impact of social media on female student's social lifestyle. The study deployed a

quantitative research methodology involving questionnaire research instrument

among 69 female students in the NorthWest University, South Africa. (J. Chukwuere,

P. Chukwuere 2017)

Social media is a platform for public around the World to discuss their issues

and opinions. Before knowing the actual aspects of social media people must have to

know what does’ social media mean. Social media is a term used to describe the

interaction between groups or individuals in which they produce, share, and

sometimes exchange ideas, images, videos and many more over the internet and in

virtual communities. Children are growing up surrounded by mobile devices and

interactive social networking sites such as Twitter, My Space, and Facebook, Orkut

which has made the social media a vital aspect of their life. Social network is

transforming the behavior in which youthful people relate with their parents, peers, as

well as how they make use of technology. The effects of social networking are two

fold [1] On the positive side, social networks can act as invaluable tools for

professionals. They achieve this by assisting young professionals to market their skills

and seek business opportunities. Social networking sites may also be used to network

efficiently. On the negative side, the internet is laden with a number of risks

associated with online communities. Cyber bullying, which means a type of

harassment that is perpetrated using electronic technology, is one of the risks. In this

paper we cover every aspect of social media with its positive and negative effects.

Focus is on the particular field like health, business, education, society and youth.
During this paper we explain how these media will influence the society in a broad

way. (W.Akraml & R.Kumar, 2017)

Social networking sites have played an important role in enhancing students'

social presence. As an educational tool for online courses, they have significantly

contributed in promoting students' motivation for learning. The aim of this research is

to investigate the impact of social networking sites on students' academic

performance. We conduct a comprehensive review on the usage of social networking

sites in academic environments to identify the influential factors and propose a new

model based on several research hypotheses. To evaluate the hypotheses and verify

the proposed model, a survey is conducted on the female students from a major

research university in Malaysia. We use Decision Making Trial and Evaluation

Laboratory to perform the data analysis. In relation to the statistical technique, this

technique can find the casual relationships among the factors, their effect size and

their importance levels. The results of our survey revealed that there is positive

relationship between social presence, students' social wellbeing and their academic

performance. (S. Sarminah N. Mehrbakhsh and I. Othmas 2019)

The growth and the popularity of the Social networks has a high impact on the

development of the students in the field of Personality, Attitudes, Knowledge and on

its whole academic performance in classroom and society. This paper envisage on the

impact of Social Network on Education and Training of the students

Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory to perform the data analysis. In

relation to the statistical technique, this technique can find the casual relationships

among the factors, their effect size and their importance levels. The results of our

survey revealed that there is positive relationship between social presence, students'
social wellbeing and their academic performance. (Kumar, V. Ashish, V. Shankar and

T. Prashant, 2012)

Social networks have had a major influence on students' performance in recent

years. These networks create many opportunities and threats for students in various

fields. Addiction to social networking and its impact on students' academic

performance caused the researcher to design and conduct this study. The purpose of

this study was to investigate the relationship between social networking addiction and

academic performance of students in Iran. In this cross-sectional study, 360 students

were enrolled by stratified random sampling. The study tools included personal

information form and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale. Also, the students'

overall grade obtained in previous educational term was considered as the indicator of

academic performance. Data were analyzed using SPSS-18.0 and descriptive and

inferential statistics. The mean social networking addiction was higher in male

students (52.65 ± 11.50) than in female students (49.35 ± 13.96) and this difference

was statistically significant (P < 0.01). There was a negative and significant

relationship between students' addiction to social networking and their academic

performance (r = - 0.210, p < 0.01).

The social networking addiction of the students was at moderate level and the male

students had a higher level of addiction compared to the female students. There was a

negative and significant relationship between the overall use of social networks and

academic performance of students. Therefore, it is imperative that the university

authorities take interventional steps to help students who are dependent on these

networks and, through workshops, inform them about the negative consequences of

addiction to social networks. (Azizi SM1, Soroush A1, Khatony, 2019)

Capstone Concept for Joint Operations: Joint Force 2020 attributes remarkably

transformative consequences to the diffusion of new communications technologies,

asserting that social networks act as a catalyst for change and that mobile technology

presents a challenge to future operations in terms of increased scrutiny. Senior

military leaders need to understand and appreciate the human processes underlying

social networks as well as why this medium can empower the many to challenge the

few. This paper explores three elements of the rise of technologically enabled social

networks. It first explores how people leveraged modern communication technologies

to overcome political barriers and challenge authority in China, Iran and the Arab

Spring, and why referring to social networking as a catalyst may diminish

appreciating the importance of traditional socio-political pressures. The paper then

examines the social and neuroscience behind the phenomenon of technologically

enabled social networking, why visual imagery and the spread of mobile technologies

present further challenges, and how organizational trust models may provide potential

solutions for Joint Leaders in future operations. (Colonel Daniel J. W. King, 2013)

College students are the prominent users of social networking sites. Some

studies revealed negative effect of social networking on academic performance, so

finding some variables which can mediate this negative effect is important. This

descriptive-correlational study examined the mediating role of informal learning and

engagement in relationship between social networking and academic performance. To

this aim, 380 university students were selected using cluster sampling. Social

Network Sites Usage, Student's Engagement in School Scale, perceived educational

outcome of social networks and student self-reported GPA were used as instruments.

Findings from path analysis revealed that the direct effect of social networking on

academic performance and engagement was negative but its impact on informal
learning was positive. Path analysis showed neither informal learning nor academic

engagement can mediate negative effect of social networking on academic

performance. (R.M. Ali, A. Mohsen, and Z. Mina 2018)

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This study intended to know the impact of social networks on academic

performance of students in Aurora Senior High School (ASHS).

This chapter presents the in depth descriptions of the research methodology

sampling technique for the selection of participants, research instruments used, data

gathering and data analysis procedures that will be appropriate with the study.

3.1 Research Design

For the realization of the aims of this study, a descriptive survey

methodology was utilized. Survey research is characterized by information collected

from a sample to describe aspects of the population from which the sample is part of

and is conducted through asking question (Fraenkel & Wallen 2003). In this case a

written survey or a questionnaire will be utilized.

Questionnaire often provide cheap and effective way of data collection in

structured and manageable form. Because of its convenience, it is the preferred

approach of many researchers. (Birmingham & Wilkinson 2003).

3.2 Sampling Technique and the Sample

In this study the respondent will be selected from the students enrolled at

Aurora Senior High School (ASHS) during the academic year 2019-2020.
The sampling method that will be used is stratified random sampling.

Stratified sampling is a method of sample selection that involves the division of a

population into smaller groups known as strata. It is used to ensure that there are

enough respondents with certain characteristic in the sample. Stratified random

sampling will be utilized to give equal opportunities for every students of every

strand. The Aurora Senior High School (ASHS) is divided into five educational

program namely Accountancy and Business Management (ABM), Arts and Design

(A&D) Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), Science, Technology, Engineering

and Mathematics (STEM), Technical Vocational Education (TVL).

A total 297 of students will be selected through simple stratified random

sampling. It is given by the table below.

Strand Population Sample

ABM 201 52

A&D 19 5

HUMSS 408 106

STEM 94 24

TVL 432 110

Total 1154 297

3.3 Data Gathering Procedure

Research Instrument
This study utilized questionnaire as the data gathering instrument. The

questionnaire is made by the researchers guided by the set of parameters to obtain

pertinent data inclined with the purpose of the study. The questionnaire included

questions about the effect of social network in students’ academic performance on

Aurora Senior High School.

The researchers sought for the assistance of educational experts to validate the

research instruments. Modifications in the instruments were made basing from the

feedbacks and recommendations from the experts.

Data Collection

Upon the approval and validation of the research instrument, the researchers

seeded permission to the participating students. A letter of request for consent to

administer the study to the participants was given.

The administration of the questionnaires was given personally by the

researchers with the duly coordinated teachers of the students. The respondents were

given informed consent before participating in the study. They were informed about

the study’s purpose, content, duration and potential risks and benefits.

3.4 Data Analysis

The questionnaire inputs and data of the respondents was analyzed through the

following statistical tools.

1. Weighted Mean. The weighted mean will be used to describe the

general perspective of the respondents on the set parameters in the

tools that will be used.

2. Frequency and Percentage. This will be used to show the number of

the respondents who will answer every particular item in the

questionnaire. This will also be used to get the number and proportion

of respondents who provided the same answers to the different

categories.

3. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The result of the

study will be analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences

(SPSS). (SPSS) (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) is an

integrated system of computer programs design for the analysis of

social data. The system provides a unified and comprehensive package

that enables the researcher to perform among different types of data

analysis in a simple and convenient manner.

CHAPTER IV

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

This chapter presents the data gathered to answer the problems set in chapter I.

This study aimed to investigate about the impact of social networking sites on

students’ academic performance in Aurora Senior High School (ASHS).

Table 2 shows that the majority spent 3 to 4 hours bearing a total of 31 %,

whereas 26 % spent 7 hours and more hours and 8 % spent less than an hour on these

sites indicating that a major part of students spends more than 3 hours accessing social

networking sites on the youth or students grounds of an ability to attract a large

number pf population’s time.

In the study of Paul J. and Cochran J. (2012), results revealed a statistically

significant negative relationship between time spent by students on Online Social

Network (OSN) and their academic performance. The time spent on OSN was found

to be heavily influenced by the attention span of the students. Specifically, determined

that the higher the attention span, the lower is the time spent on OSN.

above, it is found out that social networking sites helps to develop the vocabulary of

the students with the mean of 3. 4815. It could be a good indicator that students help

them to develop themselves. Social networking sites bear on one’s life. In turn

vindicating the sense of realization each individual embodies about the proper usage

of social networking sites that led to positive impact in each of their lives.

The social networking addiction of the students was at moderate level and the

male students had a higher level of addiction compared to the female students. There

was a negative and significant relationship between the overall use of social networks

and academic performance of students. Therefore, it is imperative that the university

authorities take interventional steps to help students who are dependent on these

networks and, through workshops, inform them about the negative consequences of

addiction to social networks. (Azizi SM1, Soroush A1, Khatony, 2019)
