Factors Affecting Solubility

A. Nature of Solute and Solvent: Which of the solute will dissolve in water
and
kerosene?

Solute solvent
water kerosene
Sodium chloride /
Naphthalene /
What kind of solute is
Polar Solute
soluble in polar solvent?
What kind of solute is
soluble in nonpolar Non polar solute
solvent?
Make a general statement A solute will only dissolve in a solvent
on how the nature of where they have similar properties. Those that
solute and solvent affects exhibithydrogen bonding are often polar
solubility molecules(ethyl alcohol) and those that experience
ionicbonding between salts (NaCl) normally will
dissolvein water which is also a polar solvent. On
the other hand, a nonpolar molecule, such as
naphthalene, lacks hydrogen and ionic bonding and
will dissolve in a nonpolar solvent, such as kerosene.

4.- Predict whether each of the following will dissolve or mix more likely in
water or kerosene.

a. Margarine Kerosene
b. Hydrogen chloride, HCl Water
c. Ethyl alcohol, C2H6O Water
5.-Using the solubility curves, Figure 2 answer the following.

a. At what temperature
Will 10g KClO3 be dissolved in
100g water to form a saturated
solution? 30oC

b. What type of solution is

formed if 40 g KNO3 is dissolved Saturated solution
in 100 g water at 300C?
6.-The Henry’s law constant for Given: K=3.70x10-4
helium in water at 300C is 3.70 x
P= 2.50 atm
10-4 mol L-1 atm-1 ,What is the
solubility of helium at 2.50 atm T= 30oC
and 300C?
S=?

Solution:
S = 3.70x10-4 (2.50 atm)
S= 9.25x10-4M

8. Figure 5 below shows the
solubility curves of some salts in
water in grams per 1000 ml
solution versus temperature in
degrees Celsius. Interpret the
graph by answering the following
questions:

a. Which compound has a

solubility that is almost constant? NaCl

b. Which has a solubility that

is almost in direct proportion to Pb(NO3)2
the temperature?

c. Which has a solubility that

Ce2(SO4)3
decreases with temperature?

KNO3
d. If you have a solution
containing equal amounts of KCl
and KNO3, which salt crystallizes
when the system is cooled to
800C? (note: This crystallization
process is used to separate
components of a solution and to
obtain pure crystal)

9.- Solve the following:

a. How many grams of NaCL are present in 250-g salt solution containing 9% NaCl?
Define the operational definition of the concentration of solution.
Given: Salt Solution 250g
NaCl is 9%

Solution:
Mass of NaCl = Total Mass x Percentage of N
Mass of NaCl = 250g x 9%
9.
=250g x 100

Mass of NaCl =22.5 g

b. A solution is prepared by mixing 50 ml of C2H5OH in 300 ml of distilled water, What

is the % v/v concentration of the solution?
Define the operational definition of the concentration of solution.
Given: volume of Solute = 50 mL
volume solvent = 300 mL

Required: percent concentration by volume

Solution: Basis: proof no. = 2 (% v⁄v)
%𝑣𝑣= 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑒
× 100
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 + 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡

= 50 𝑚𝐿
× 100
350 𝑚𝐿
= 14.28%
Proof no = 2 (14.28)
= 28.56

Answer: The % v/v is 14.28% and the proof no. is 28.56

c. How do we determine the molarity of a solution containing 4 grams of NaOH in 200

ml of solution.?
Define the operational definition of the concentration of solution.

Molar Mass of NaOH= 23+16+1

=40g

Mass of NaOH present in 1 liter of solution = 4x1000 = 16 g

No of moles = mass/molar mass 250
= 16/40
= 0.4 M

The solution is dilute, it is

because the mole is smaller
compare to the volume of
Sodium
hydroxide. The more solvent
there is, the lower the
concentration and the lower the
molarity.
And it is unsaturated because
the solution contains less solute
particles than the amount of the
solvent.
