Course Description:
This is an introductory course that leads to a Computer Systems Servicing National
Certificate Level II (NC II). It covers Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies
(PECs); Common and Core Competencies that a Senior High School student
ought to possess in maintaining and repairing computer systems.

3
What’s In
In this module, you will learn more about entrepreneurship and the
entrepreneurial competencies related to computer systems servicing. You will have
first-hand experience in educational activities leading to assessment of your
personal entrepreneurial competencies (PECs) and the entrepreneurial
competencies of a successful computer technician within your barangay or locality.
You will also have several activities that will align your competencies with those of
successful practitioners. Moreover, this module will encourage you to think about
entrepreneurship and its role in the business community as well as in the
economic and social development of an individual.
To start with this module, let us first understand entrepreneurs and
entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurs are those with the skills and capabilities to see and evaluate
business opportunities. They are individuals who can strategically identify products
or services needed by the community and have the capacity to deliver them at the
right time and at the right place.
Entrepreneurs are agents of economic change; they organize, manage, and assume
risks of a business. Some of the good qualities of entrepreneurs are:
opportunity-seeker, risk-taker, goal-setter, excellent planner, confident
problem-solver, hardworking, persistent and committed.
Entrepreneurship, on the other hand, is not just a simple business activity but a
strategic process of innovation and new product creation. Basically,
entrepreneurship is both an art and science of converting business ideas into
marketable products or services to improve the quality of living.
Now that you have background knowledge about entrepreneurs and
entrepreneurship, you can now walk through in assessing your PECs. Always
remember that successful entrepreneurs continuously develop and improve their
PECs.

Some people are dragged to the promise of entrepreneurship for varied reasons like
capitalizing on a business idea, building wealth, building their workplace
environment, and desiring not to work for others. Not all entrepreneurs have the
ability to lead a successful business enterprise even if there are numerous benefits
associated with entrepreneurship.
There are a lot of factors that can be attributed to entrepreneurial success
regardless of the goal, task, or activity being undertaken. Entrepreneurship is for
people with a dream or an aspiration to generate something new in the
marketplace. It creates opportunities and opens the doors to possibilities you never
knew existed. Entrepreneurship is about creating opportunity out of an idea and
force.
Entrepreneurial competencies refer to the important characteristics that should
be possessed by an individual to perform entrepreneurial functions effectively. To
help you become a prospective entrepreneur in animation, you have to evaluate
whether you are well suited for starting your own business, assess what
competencies you lack and/or possess, and measure what type of individual
competencies may strengthen your business (Ando, 2016).
In this lesson, you will learn some of the most important characteristics,
attributes, lifestyle, skills, and traits that an entrepreneur or an employee must
have to be successful in a chosen career.

Lesson
2 Occupational Health and
Safety (OHS) Procedures

What’s In

An ICT student should know how to behave when working in the computer
laboratory or even at home with computer equipment, as well as how to implement
a safe way of accomplishing every task. Safety practices should be learned early
and always adhered to in working with any electrical and electronic device,
including personal computers and its peripherals. This is for your protection as
well as to the people working with you, and for the devices that you are using. The
basis for this process begins with Occupational Health and Safety Policies.

What is It

OHS or Occupational Health and Safety refers to the legislation, policies,

procedures and activities that aim to protect the health, safety and welfare of all
people at the workplace.
Below are some of the safety practices that we should consider while working with
any electrical and electronic device, including personal computers and its
peripherals.
1. Do not work alone so that there’s someone who can take care of you in
case of an emergency.
2. Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before working
on it.
3. Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid getting electrocuted
or accidentally damaging computer parts.
4. Be careful with tools that may cause short circuits.
5. Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any parts of the
computer.
11
6. Do not use excessive force if things don’t quite slip into place.
7. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and prevent
accidents.
8. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the INTEGRATED
CIRCUITS(IC) parts.
9. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with the
organization’s OHS procedures and practices.
10. Make sure that the pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable
connector.
11. Contingency measures during workplace accidents, fire and other
emergencies are recognized.
12. Use a brush, compressed air or blower in cleaning the computer system.
Occupational Health and Safety Standards
Each student has a responsibility to their colleagues and their organization to
report and act upon any potential workplace hazard. Students need to be aware of
the type of hazards that are possibly present in their work environment. Below are
important steps to consider:
Procedure
1. Identify the hazard.
2. Clear the area close to the hazard.
3. Partition the hazard off or clearly identify the area to protect other people
from harm.
4. If the hazard is easily and safely cleared, then do so.
If not…
5. Report the hazard to the appropriate person (such as teacher in charge,
principal etc.) to obtain assistance.
6. Following clearing of the hazard fill out the correct documentation to assist in
identifying improved practice to reduce further incidence of hazards.
All hazards must be reported using the Accident Report Form. This enables us to
track the kinds of hazards we have in our workplace and take action when
necessary to make it safer for all students and clients.
Accident Reports
Forms are used to give specific details with regards to the accidents that happened
in the laboratory during experiments. Accident reports contains the following
details
● Name of the person injured
● Date and time of accident
● Type of injury
● First aid given
● Action taken to prevent further accidents

12
Date:
Form No: Accident Report Form
Room No:
Name: Gr. & Sec:
Type of Injury Cause of Injury Remedy

Hazardous substances
If the workplace hazard appears to be dangerous to staff and clients and
professional assistance is required:
A. Call the supervisor or manager and advise them of the problem and the
urgency of the matter.
B. Depending on the risk it may be called an evacuation.
C. Follow the evacuation procedure.
D. The supervisor or manager will call the fire brigade or specialized personnel
who will deal with the spill.
Fire exits
All fire exits should be kept clear of obstacles. All students have responsibility to
make sure that chairs, empty boxes or any type of obstacles are not placed in or
near fire exit doorways.
All corridors also need to have equipment stored in one side only to ensure that in
the event of emergency there is a clear exit.
Fire safety Procedure
Each work area has a designated fire warden, who in the event of the fire will take
charge. They are recognized by wearing a red hard hat.
If you find the fire:
- Assess the danger prior to doing anything.
- If it is safe to move, assist anyone in the vicinity of the fire away from
danger.
- If it is possible, close the door to the fire area.
- Call for assistance. Verbally call FIRE, FIRE in a loud and clear voice.
- Break the glass section of the fire alert call point.
- Call to the switch; ensure you know where the fire is, any other details that
may be of assistance to the fire brigade. Details could be size of the fire,
cause or type of fire, any people hurt or trapped, has anyone tried to put it
out.
13
- If safer to do so, attack the fire with the correct extinguisher or fire hose.
If the designated fire officer is not present, someone quickly needs to take
responsibility and:
1. Locate the source of the fire.
2. Locate any people.
3. Remove all people from the building.
4. Once outside do a headcount.
5. Notify the authorities.
Personal safety while working with PCs
Computer equipment can be dangerous, and you or others can be injured or even
killed if you don’t follow proper safety guidelines when working along with PCs. The
following are some precautionary measures to take before working with any
computer equipment:
- Wear shoes with non-conductive rubber soles to help reduce the chance of
being shocked or seriously injured in an electrical accident.
- Do not work on components that are plugged into their power source.
- Do not remove expansion cards from a computer when it is turned on.
- Remove jewelries when working inside any computer related equipment.
- Be sure not to mix electronics components and water.

What I Can Do
Task 1: Simulation on Applying OHS Policies and Procedures
Instructions:
1. Based on the discussions above, conduct a simulation on “Applying OHS Policies
and Procedures” when planning for an installation activity.
2. Then performance will be rated according to the following:
Performance Criteria
5 Have Shown five OHS policies in different area
4 Have shown four OHS policies in different areas
3 Have shown three OHS policies in different
areas
2 Have shown OHS policies in different areas
1 Have not shown any OHS policies

14
3. Document your simulation/mock-up. Make a collage of your output & send it to
your teacher.
