Introduction to Manufacturing

OVERVIEW:

Our society has become accustomed to the luxury of purchasing commodities from retail
stores in a way that is convenient and affordable. Most of us don’t take the time to think much past
the checkout line, however. Where do these products come from exactly? Were they made in our
country or shipped in from somewhere else entirely? What machines and equipment were used to
make the items we purchase? Who are the people involved in manufacturing and assembling the
finished goods that line the shelves of our favorite stores?

This course will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the vast industry called manufacturing.
In this unit, you’ll examine the basics of manufacturing, including a brief history and some of the
basic processes and principles that work together to transform raw materials into useful and
valuable commodities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: After successful completion of this course/subject, you should

be able to:
 Describe the principles of the major manufacturing processes
 Identify the standard processes used to produce products
 Evaluate and decide on the optimal process to produce a product
 List down properties of materials and steps in designing a product.
 Explain the core beliefs of the JIT philosophy & the differences between
“push” and “pull” systems
 Justifies the role of people in JIT and why respect for people is so important
 Applies the concept of MRP II and JIT in solving manufacturing related
problems.

COURSE MATERIALS:
Lesson 1. Definition and Explanation of Technological Terms and Systems
Manufacturing technology provides the tools that enable production of all
manufactured goods.  These master tools of industry magnify the effort of individual
workers and give an industrial nation the power to turn raw materials into the affordable,
quality goods essential to today’s society.  In short, we make modern life possible.

Manufacturing technology provides the productive tools that power a growing, stable
economy and a rising standard of living. These tools create the means to provide an
effective national defense. They make possible modern communications, affordable
agricultural products, efficient transportation, innovative medical procedures, space
exploration... and the everyday conveniences we take for granted.
