CRITERION C: Processing and evaluating

Group Project

CLASS: 3rd ESO  A /  B /  C /  D /  E

According to the outcome of your designed experimental plan, you now have to process and interpret qualitative
and/or quantitative data, and explain conclusions that have been appropriately reached.

By doing this, you must show you have developed analytical thinking skills, which can be used to evaluate the method
and discuss possible improvements or extensions.

PART I
Turn your obtained data into a table and a graph.
Use checking lists to ensure every aspect is correctly covered:

Presentation
Data Table: must be included
Data table must include:
 appropriate title
 IV and DV headings
 units
 averages / mean
 consistent, with significant numbers
 any other processed data (if applicable)
…now turn your data into a table:

Graph: Must include

Graph must include:
appropriate graph (select your option):
 line
 scatter plot
 bar
 histogram
 same appropriate title as data table
 correct scale
 correct labeling of axis
 correct units
 logical axis orientation
 appropriate scale
 processed data (averages / mean) plotted correctly (if needed)
 legend (if needed)
…now turn your data into a graph:

Analysis

Briefly restate the purpose of the study.

Describe what your results are showing (patterns, trends. Eg between point A and B the temperature
rose to X. From C to D it stayed constant. From D to E it fell to Y).

Analyze your major findings (bring out the essential message that your data is showing)

…now turn “Analysis” answers into a paragraph:

Conclusion

What happened to the dependent variable (DV) when you changed the independent variable (IV)?

Give 3 pieces of evidence from your graph to support your conclusion.

1.

2.

3.

Does your evidence support or reject your hypothesis? Give examples from your data.

5
CRITERION C: Processing and evaluating

Can you give one scientific reason for your conclusion? (Remember to use consulted sources1)

…now turn “Conclusion” answers into a paragraph:

1
Remember to include consulted sources that supports your conclusion using Vancouver citation method.

Evaluation

Evaluate your data

Is there enough data to answer your hypothesis?

Is there any evidence that your data is reliable? (refers to error bars as visual signal of reliability)

Is there a big difference between your groups?

Are the data points all near the best-fit line or scattered all over the graph?

…now turn “Evaluation evaluate your data” answers into a paragraph:

CRITERION C: Processing and evaluating

Evaluate your procedure

Did your method allow you to collect good data? Why?

Were your measuring instruments suitable? Why?

Were your measurements accurate, valid, precise enough? Why?

Are there any errors associated with the measurement instrument? Why?

8
CRITERION C: Processing and evaluating

Did you take enough samples? Why?

Source of Error Effect on the experiment Improvement to experiment

If you could continue this experiment, what would you investigate next?

Register (take notes about):

 What do you want to search? (used keywords)

 List of consulted and used sources to support your report

 Check if the source is scientific/reliable (is information taken from newspaper, scientific article,
scientific magazine, scientific organization…?)

Textbooks, internet, etc. MUST be properly referenced (using Vancouver 2 citing method)
