Experiment No : 05

Experiment Name : Study on Bleaching of cotton fabric.

Theory :

Although much of the coloring matter of raw cotton fibers are removed in
the scouring stage together with the impurities, there will still be some natural
coloring matter left in the cotton fabric that could not be removed, consequently
the fabric will still have traces of color in them. Therefore bleaching is necessary.
The aim of bleaching is to whiten the cotton fabric. The process consists of
oxidizing the bodies into simpler water-soluble colorless compounds by using
oxidizing agents, for example hydrogen peroxide. The aim of this lab is to bleach
the already scoured cotton fabric to determine any differences in appearance
between the unbleached and the bleached fabric.

Objective of the Experiment:

1. To remove the natural color of textile fiber,

2. To make the fabric permanent white and bright,
3. To increase the absorbency power of the fabric,
4. To make the fabric compatible for the next subsequent process,
5. To ensure the level of dyeing property.
Apparatus & Materials:

 Cotton fabric.
 Scissor.
 Electric Balance.
 Dyeing pot.
 Biker.
 Pipet(0.1,0.2,0.5 ml)
 Fresh water.
 Chemicals.
 Glass Cylinder.
 Dryer.
 Padder.
 Stirrer.
 Steal mug.
Recipe:

 H2O2 =3 cc/l
 H2O2 Stabilizer =1 cc/l
 Detergent =1.5 cc/l
 Leveling agent = 1.5cc/l
 Wetting agent =1.5 cc/l
 Sequesting Agent =1 cc\l
 Time =1 hour.
 Temperature Agent =900 c
 PH =11-12
 M:L = 1:13
 Sample Weight = 7gm.

Calculation:

 Total Liquor = (13*7) cc

= 91 cc
 H2O2 =
= 0.273 cc
 Detergent = cc
= 0.136 cc
 Leveling Agent =
= 0.136 cc
 Wetting Agent =
= 0.136 cc
 Sequesting Agent =
= 0.091 cc
 Fresh Water = {91-(0.273+0.136+0.136+0.136+0.091)} cc
= (91-0.772) cc
=90.228 cc

Procedure:

 We took a cotton sample & weighted it on electric balance.

 We took required apparatus & prepared for experiment.
 Then we calculated the required amount of the chemicals &
water.
 We took water & chemicals in dyeing pot.
 We put the sample into dyeing pot & shocked it.
 Then we put the pot into machine & set the programe of the
machine.
 After one hour, we put out the fabric & poured it onto padder.
 Finally we ironed it again.
 Then we calculated natural impurities that removed.
 We collected our final sample.

Precaution:

 We should wear glasses & gloves.

 We should wear apron.
 We should careful about using chemicals.
 We should take the chemicals in accurate amount.
 We should measure weight carefully.
 We should calculate result properly.
 We should do all the process very carefully.

Conclusion:

The aim of this experiment was to bleach the already scoured cotton
fabric. The treated fabric turned much whiter in color and less soft in handle. In
conclusion, bleaching of the scoured cotton fabric was successful.
