Lesson
Finding the Equation
1 of a Line
Now that you have learned how to plot points on a coordinate plane and graph
linear equations, rewrite equations from the standard form to the slope – intercept
form and vice versa. We can now begin to write the equations of the line given: the
slope and its y-intercept, the slope and a point on a line, and given two points of a
line.

What’s In

Let us recall how to write linear equations in standard form and slope-
intercept form by doing this activity.

Activity 1: Quara needs help!

Direction: Read and answer the given problem. Write your answer in your answer
sheet.

3
Quara bought 2 boxes of disposable face mask and 3 pieces face
shields. Each box of disposable face mask costs Php 700 from an online
seller. She paid a total of Php 1,790. Formulate an equation that represents
the total amount she spent to buy both the boxes of disposable face masks
x and face shields y. Write it in slope-intercept form and rewrite it in
standard form.

Slope – intercept form: __________________

Standard form: __________________

What’s New

In this module, you will apply the knowledge of writing linear equations from
standard form, ax + by = c, to slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, and vice versa. Thus,
you can easily identify the slope and the y-intercept of the given linear equation. Let
us begin by identifying the slope and y-intercept in this activity.

Activity 2: Who is the winner?

Aiden and Ropher are best buddies and are both in grade 8 level. They were
given 5 linear equations in standard form. Their task is to find the slope and y-
intercept of each equation.
Direction: Identify between Aiden and Ropher who got the correct answer in every
equation. Write the name on the space provided. The one with the higher
score is the winner.
Aiden Ropher

________ 1. 2x + y = 1 m = -2; b = -1 m = -2; b = 1

________ 2. –x – y = -3 m = -1; b = 3 m = -1; b = -3
________ 3. 5x + 10y = 35 m = -1/2; b = 7/2 m = -2; b = 7
________ 4. -2x – 2y = 1 m = -2; b = -1/2 m = -1; b = -1/2
________ 5. 6x – 6y = 1 m = 1; b = -1/6 m = -1; b = -1/6

And the winner is _____________________.

What is It

In writing equation of a line, there are three forms. Using the most appropriate
form will help you find the equations of the line easier. Perhaps the most familiar
form of a linear equation is slope-intercept form written as 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, where m is
the slope and b is the y-intercept. This form will be used most of the time in writing
linear equations.
The equation of the line can be determined using the following forms:

a. slope-intercept form: 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏;
b. point-slope form: 𝑦 – 𝑦1 = 𝑚 (𝑥 – 𝑥1 ); and
𝑦2 − 𝑦1
c. two-point form: 𝑦 – 𝑦1 = ( ) (𝑥 – 𝑥1 )
𝑥2 − 𝑥1
where
m is the slope
x and y are the points on the line
(x1, y1) are the coordinates of Point 1 (P1)
(x2, y2) are the coordinates of Point 2 (P2)

A. Equation of the line given a slope and y – intercept

To find the equation of the line given slope and y-intercept, use the slope-
intercept form.

𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏

where m is the slope and b is the y – intercept.

Illustrative examples:
1. Find the equation of the line with slope (m) 2 and a y-intercept (b) 5.
Solutions:
Using the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, substitute the slope and the y-intercept.
Thus, the equation of the line is 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 5.
2
2. Find the equation of a line given slope (m) and a y-intercept (b) -1.
3

Solutions:
Using the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, substitute the slope and the y-intercept.
2
Thus, the equation of a line is 𝑦 = 𝑥 – 1.
3

Guided Practice:

1. Find the equation of the line whose slope (m) is 5 and y-intercept (b) is 7.
Solutions:
Using the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, substitute the slope and the y - intercept.
Answer: ___________________

5
4
2. Find the equation of the line that has a slope (m) of − and a
5
y-intercept (b) of -1.
Solutions:
Using the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, substitute the slope and the y - intercept.
Answer: ___________________

B. Equation of the line given a slope and a point on a line

To find the equation of a line given slope and a point on a line, use the
point – slope form.
𝒚 – 𝒚𝟏 = 𝒎(𝒙 – 𝒙𝟏)
where m is the value of the slope and a point 𝑃1 (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) on the line.

Illustrative example:
1. Find the equation of the line in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 whose slope is 3 and a
point (1, 4) on the line.
Solutions:
Substitute the slope m = 3 and the point (1, 4) in the equation
y – y1 = m(x – x1)
y – 4 = 3(x – 1) By substitution
y – 4 = 3x – 3 Use distributive property
y = 3x – 3 + 4 Apply Addition Property of Equality
y = 3x + 1 Simplify

Thus, the equation of the line is y = 3x + 1.

Alternative solution:
You may also use the slope-intercept form. Since the slope and the point are
given, find the y-intercept first by substituting it to the formula 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.

Solve for b:
4 = 3(1) + b By substitution.
4=3+b Use distributive property of equality.
4–3=b Apply addition property of equality.

1=b Simplify.
The next step is to substitute the values of m and b in the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.
Thus, the equation of the line is y = 3x + 1.

6
2. Find the equation of the line in the form y = mx + b given slope m = 1 and a
point (-4, 7) on the line.
Solutions:
Substitute the slope m = 1 and a point (-4, 7) in the equation:
y – y1 = m(x – x1)

y – 7 = 1[x – (-4)] By substitution

y–7=x+4 Use distributive property of equality
y=x+4+7 Apply addition property of equality
y = x + 11 Simplify

Thus, the equation of the line is y = x + 6.

Alternative solution:
You may also use the slope – intercept form. Since the slope and the point is
given, you need to find the y- intercept first by substituting in the formula
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.

Solve for b:
7 = 1(-4) + b By substitution
7 = -4 + b Use distributive property of equality
7+4=b Apply addition property of equality
11 = b Simplify
The next step is to substitute the values of slope 𝑚 and 𝑦-intercept 𝑏 in the
equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.
Thus, the equation of the line is 𝑦 = 3𝑥 + 1.

Guided Practice:
1. Find the equation of a line of the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 given slope m of 2 and a
point P1 (4, -1)
Solutions:
Substitute the slope (𝑚) 2 and a point (4, -1) in the equation: 𝑦 – 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 – 𝑥1 )

C. Equation of the line given two points
To find the equation of the line given two points on a line, use the two-
point form.
𝑦2 – 𝑦1
y – y1 = (x – x1)
𝑥2 – 𝑥 1

where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are the coordinates of P1 and P2

Illustrative examples:
1. Find the equation of the line that passes through the points P1 (2, 1) and
P2 (-1, -5).
Solutions:
x1 , y 1 x2 , y 2 𝑦2 – 𝑦1
Substitute P1 (2, 1) and P2 (-1, -5) in the equation: y – y1 = (x – x1)
𝑥2 – 𝑥1

−5 − 1
y – 1 =[ ] (x – 2) By substitution
−1− 2
−6
y–1= (x – 2) Calculate the slope
−3

y – 1 = 2 (x – 2) Simplify the slope

y – 1 = 2x – 4 Use distributive property

y = 2x – 4 + 1 Apply addition property of equality
y = 2x – 3 Simplify

Thus, the equation of the line is y = 2x – 3.

Alternative solution:

You may also use the slope – intercept form. Since the two points are given, you
𝑦 –𝑦
need to find the slope first by substituting in the formula m = 2 1 .
𝑥2 – 𝑥1

𝑦2 – 𝑦1 −5 − 1 −6
m= m= m= m=2
𝑥2 – 𝑥1 −1− 2 −3

The next step is to substitute the slope m = 2 and the coordinates of either
points for x and y. Use P1 (2, 1) in the equation y = mx + b.
Solve for b:

1 = 2(2) + 𝑏 By Substitution
1 = 4 + 𝑏 Simplify
1– 4 = 𝑏 Apply addition property of equality
−3 = 𝑏 Simplify

The next step is to substitute the values of 𝑚 and 𝑏 in the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.

Thus, the equation of a line is 𝑦 = 2𝑥 – 3.

8
Note:
In case that the given two points are the x and y-intercepts, we can use
the intercept form of a linear equation:
𝑥 𝑦
+ =1
𝑏 𝑎
where a and b are the values of x and y – intercepts, respectively.
Remember: x-intercept is (a, 0) and y-intercept is (0, b)

Example: Find the equation of the line given P1 (2,0) and P2 (0,7).
Given: a = 2 and b = 7
Solutions:
𝑥 𝑦
Substitute a and b to the equation + =1
𝑎 𝑏
𝑥 𝑦
[ + = 1] 14 Multiply both sides with the LCD 14
2 7

Thus, the equation of the line is 7x + 2y = 14.

Guided Practice:
1. Find the equation of line that passes through the points P 1 (3, -1) and P2 (6, -
10).
Solutions:
𝑦2 – 𝑦1
Substitute P1 (3, -1) and P2 (6, -10) in the equation: y – y1 = (x – x1)
𝑥2 – 𝑥1

equation in slope-intercept form for the total tutorial fee (t) and for (h) number of
hours consumed in a quarter.

Answer:

What is It

Based on the result of your pre-assessment test, it shows that you have
already a prior knowledge about writing equation of a line given (a) slope and y-
intercept; (b) slope and a point on a line; (c) two points on a line. Now, let us explore
and be familiar with solving problems involving linear equations in two variables as
the focus of our discussion for today.
Let us use this word problem for our discussions.

Illustrative example:

Corrie does a 10-minute exercise daily. One of her exercise activities is to

walk up and down on their 3-step staircase. Her father challenged her to answer
a question with a reward of Php 300 as an additional allowance. Her father,
who is an engineer, showed her the graph of their staircase. On the graph, the
slope is 2 feet and it contains a point (0, 4). What is the equation of a line?

13
A. Given a slope and y – intercept

▪ To find the equation of the line given slope and y-intercept, use the
slope-intercept form of the line.

y = mx + b

where m is the slope, (x, y) is the point on the line and b is the y-intercept.

Solutions:

The given in this problem has a slope of 2 and a point of (0, 4). Since the y-
intercept is given, we can use the slope-intercept form to find the equation of the
line.

Thus, the equation of the line is y = 2x + 4.

B. Given a slope and a point on a line

▪ To find the equation of the line given slope and a point on a line, use the
point-slope form of the line.

y – y1 = m(x – x1)

where m is slope of the line and P1 (x1, y1) is the point on the line.

Solutions:

Given illustrative example above, we can also use a slope-point form since the
given has a slope 2 and a point (0, 4).

y – 4 = 2 (x – 0) By Substitution

y – 4 = 2x – 0 Use distributive property of equality

y = 2x + 4 Apply addition property of equality

Thus, the equation of the line is y = 2x + 4.

C. Given two points on a line

If Corrie’s father shows a graph whose line contains the points (1, 6) and
(−1 , 2), what will be the equation of the line? Is the equation still the same using
slope-intercept and point-slope form? Why?

▪ To find the equation of the line, use the two-point form of the line.

𝑦2 – 𝑦1
y – y1 = (x – x1)
𝑥2 – 𝑥1

where (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) are the coordinates of P1 and P2

14
Solutions:
𝑦2 – 𝑦1
y – y1 = (x – x1)
𝑥2 – 𝑥1

2−6
y–6 = (x + 1) By Substitution
−1−1

−4
y–6 = (x + 1) Calculate the slope
−2

y – 6 = -2 (x + 1) Simplify the slope

y – 6 = -2x – 2 Use distributive property of equality
y = -2x – 2 + 6 Apply addition property of equality
y = -2x + 4 Simplify

Therefore, the equation of a line is y = -2x + 4. Thus, we have the same

equation from the two previous answers because we have the same slope and the
points given are on the line.

Note: In case that the given two points are the x and y-intercepts, we can use the
intercept form of a linear equation:
𝑥 𝑦
+ =1
𝑎 𝑏

where a is the value for x – intercept and b for the y – intercept

Remember: (a, 0) for x – intercept; (0, b) for y – intercept

What’s More

Since you already have the idea of finding equations of the line, let us proceed
to the next activity to turn up your knowledge.

Activity 3: Tara Let’s!

Direction: Read the word problems carefully and answer the following questions.
Write your answer in your answer sheet.
