What is Audacity?

Audacity is software that allows users to record and edit audio clips. Audacity is accessible on
various operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS, and GNU/Linux. Users can access
analysis, effect, editing, plug-in, sound quality, export and import, recording and accessibility
features. Audacity is also a collaborative software that encourages users to contribute to
improvements.

Strengths

Audacity is an accessible application beneficial for instructors to utilize for inclusive education.
Audacity is a tool that can be used by all learners simultaneously while completing different
finished products.

Weaknesses

With any product that relies on technology to function, Audacity is inoperable if technology
unpredictably fails. It may also be time-consuming for instructors to teach students to use the
software.  Audacity can be impractical for students with mobility, vision or non-verbal students
depending on the chosen function of the software.

Application: Creating and Presenting Content

Audacity is applicable to classroom activities, exercises and instruction (both online and in-
person). A few examples are:

 English
o Portfolio Podcast: as a final project, students can record the writing assignments
they have completed over the semester.
o Debate Podcast: during persuasive writing units, students can use their skills to
engage in a debate, which can encourage further engagement.
 Math
o Explanation Podcast: instructors can record lessons for students to access outside
of class for additional support. This is also beneficial for absent students
o Notes Podcast: students can record steps and important information that will assist
them with homework, assignments, tests and examinations.
