The world identifies Jaipur as the open art gallery of various arts and crafts. In 2015, Jaipur was accredited Jaipur- 302018, Rajasthan
with the title ‘World Crafts City’ by the World Crafts Council (WCC) and selected as City of Crafts and Folk Arts’
by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Crafts utilizing metal as their core material played a big role in making Jaipur a city of crafts. Metals were used
to embellish pieces used by royalty. The royal families, at the peak of their power, acted as patrons for these
crafts due to the unique and magnificent work demonstrated by the craftspeople.
 
As the name suggests, wire inlay is called taarkashi as taar means wire in Hindi. The technique of engraving
fine metal wire on the surface of the wood is called taarkashi. Taarkashi is believed to have come from Uttar
Pradesh during the reign of Maharaja Jai Singh II. The patterns created with wires are usually geometrical
or floral with influences from Mughal arts. The metal inlay work is meticulous and skillful to craft. The artisan
transfers a design from paper onto a block of wood and then, using chisels and hammers, carves deep, thin
grooves along the marks, inside which the wire is inlaid. Traditionally the purpose of the work was seen on
ornamental boxes and tables. Today, it can be seen on other utility items like trays, spice boxes, plates, etc.
 
Sharma Art and Handicrafts, in Jaipur, is owned by Mohan Lal Sharma. His products are created from dark-
colored and seasonal Sheesham wood (Indian Rosewood). The high oil content of this wood allows the inlaid
metal to be held securely. Brass, copper, and white metal are used for inlaying products such as jewelry boxes,
pen stands, trays, wall hangings, gemstone painting boxes, brass wire inlay, and photo frames.
 
Mohan Lal Sharma has been practicing this craft for 40 years. He learned the technique from his elder brother
and won the State Award of 1986-87 and the National Award of 2013 for his skills in taarkashi. He has also par-
ticipated in exhibitions and workshops all over the country (New Delhi, Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Chennai,
Nagaland), and represented India in South Arabia.
