BLOCK SHEAR PERFORMANCE OF DOUBLE-LINE BOLTED
S690 STEEL ANGLES UNDER UNIAXIAL TENSION.

Bolted connections are used to transfer stress between structural members and angles e.g.,
Gusset Plate. Block shear failure, characterized by rupture of connecting components, may
become the dominant failure mode in this situation. Shear failure of blocks is characterized by
shear or failure along the shear plane (parallel to the axial load) and tensile failure along the
tension plane (perpendicular to the axial load).
This research work has two research objectives,
(a) To investigate the effect of the relatively low ductility of S690 HSS on the drawing angle
performance.
(b) To provide experimental data for designing the block shear strength of double-line bolted S690
HSS tension angles
Test parameters include steel grade, number of bolt rows, parallel pitch, transverse pitch, edge
distance, and length of unconnected legs. A detailed numerical analysis of the angular section
and link configuration within reasonable limits was then performed using a calibrated finite
element (FE) model to investigate the effect on block shear performance. By comparing
experimental and numerical results, the applicability of design equations in the literature and
design criteria for calculating block shear strength of double row bolted S690 HSS angle brackets
was investigated.
As expected, all the strengths of the S690 steel angles were higher than the corresponding S275
steels, but the lower ductility of the S690 steels, the inelastic deformation range, and the
displacement at failure of the B-series specimens (Table 4; from the paper that is being reviewed)
made all was low than the A-series samples. This difference is due to the different mechanical
properties of the materials. Higher values of u, fu, and fy in S275 steel compared to S690 steel
promoted stress redistribution near the block after yield initiation.
The effect of block shear strength for S690 steel angles with different lengths of unconnected
legs is shown in (Figure 7 and shown in Table 4; from the paper that is being reviewed) The
connected leg length remained constant, while the unconnected leg length varied (65 to 85 mm).
The breaking load of the pull angles was not significantly affected by increasing the unconnected
leg length from 65 mm to 85 mm, but the deformability of the S690 steel angles weakened.
Conclusion
Depending on the connections, there were two failure modes for the angle of the double line
bolt connection. A two-sided block shear mode was recorded for a sample with a relatively small
shear plane area and a large tensile plane. Block shear failure was defined in the remaining
samples by shear failure formed in the plane near the non-bonded leg of the angle. The block
shear behavior of the S690 HSS samples matched that of the NSS samples. In general, the block
shear strength of S690 steel angles increased as the number of bolt rows and parallel pitch
increased. On the other hand, increasing the pitch and edge distance increased them and
improved the shear strength of the blocks.
