Official records show the voter was deceased prior to the date the ballot was issued by the county, indicating that someone forged the voter’s signature on the ballot envelope and then submitted the ballot to the county. We are sending this letter to the address on file for the deceased voter to inform you that, while the Prosecutor's Office does not intend to take any further action in this matter, our office takes election law violations very seriously. The individual who signed and submitted the deceased voter's ballot may have had sympathetic reasons for doing so. That person, however, forged a signature on a ballot envelope in violation of two different state election laws. The intentional violation of these Jaws is a crime that can result in imprisonment and/or significant monetary fines. The deceased voter’s registration has been cancelled by the King County Elections Department and no ballots will be issued under that registration for future elections. The state and the county routinely update the voter rolls, including comparing the voter registration list to official death notices. In this case, the death notice information was not received in time to update the registration records prior to the November 2020 election.
