QUARTER 2 : TECHNIQUES IN SUMMARIZING
SUMMARIZING
 Is a brief re statement of a text’s main points.
 Is selecting out key features of a text to create a shorter version of the original text.
 You cannot add any opinion in the summary. You need to focus on the text you are summarizing.
 In summarizing, you cannot quote extensively, so Plagiarism can be avoided. Or you can use Quotation Marks
(““) to indicate copied key terms.
TWO AIMS OF SUMMARIZING
 To reproduce the main idea and key points of a text.
Main Idea – is the topic of the text.
Key Points – are arguments used to explain the main idea.
 To restate these in as few words as possible.
BENEFITS OF SUMMARIZING
1. It helps you learn to identify key ideas of a text and ignore irrelevant information.
2. It improves our memory and by extension, our comprehension.
3. It is an effective tool to self – evaluate what is understood about the original text.
SUMMARIZING TIPS
1. Read the text very carefully.
2. Ask yourself this questions:
a. What is the Main Idea?
b. What are the crucial details necessary for supporting the ideas?
c. Highlight or Jot Down what you think is the main points of the text.
d. When summarizing an entire essay, outline the writer’s argument.
e. Summarize in Chronological order.
TECHNIQUES IN SUMMARIZING
1. Reference Citation

Format 1 – Author Citation in the body of the

2. Graphic Organizing

Graphic Organizers are shapes, lines, figures, drawings, or sketches that are used to make a visual display of key
information.
Examples of graphic organizers are:

Fishbone
Pie Graph and many more.

to relay information to our loved ones, friends, in school or even in our society. “
