Musical Concept: Pulse and half note

Materials:
- SX/AX - play F and C, BX - play half note pulse (mallets too)
- Glockenspiel (mallets too)
Entry activity - Students will enter the classroom and quietly sit in their spots.

Activity #1: Bo Bo Solfege


Objective - Students will echo sing with Bo Bo (who is singing solfege syllables - but they don’t
know that yet).

Lesson Sequence:
1) Demonstrate solfege with Bo Bo the tennis ball
a) “Hey everyone, Bo Bo is here to sing with us today. Let’s copy what he will
sing.”
i) Mi-So-Mi-So (students echo each time)
ii) Mi-So-La-So
iii) So-So-Mi-La
iv) So-So-Mi
v) Do-Re-Mi
vi) Mi-Re-Do
vii) Do-So-Do
Assessment:
- Can they correctly echo back my patterns?
- Can they follow directions?
- Are they participating with Bo Bo?

Transition - “Give yourself a pat on the back for doing an awesome job with Bo Bo!”

Activity #2: Objective - Squirrel song with inst.


Objective - Students will participate in the designated lesson while singing and playing a
percussion instrument.

Lesson Sequence:
1) Review Song + patting steady beat
Mention Tie, and try to pat the half note.
“Boys and Girls, can we review the squirrel song from Monday?”
- **Have them pat the half note from last class**
- Let us chase the squirrel, up the hickory, down the hickory, let us chase the squirrel, up
the hickory tree.

2) Song + Xylophone (F and A)


Transfer steady beat to playing on Xylophone
**Have Xylophones already positioned at #1 of the L side of the room**
- Have students at #1 go get mallets
**Remind students about how to play their instruments respectfully**
(Pinch, Wrap, Bicycle)
“Now boys and girls, let’s put the steady beat on our xylophones. Find the F key and A key and
hover above them with your sticks. If you have mallets hover above the keys or point with your
finger if you aren’t on an instrument yet.”
- **play half notes on F and A and sing song again**
- Let us chase the squirrel, up the hickory, down the hickory, let us chase the squirrel, up
the hickory tree.
- Repeat 4 times so everyone gets a chance
**Have R side pat along for now or even slide up arm to prep for the next step?**
3) Add “up the hickory, down the hickory”

“Boys and Girls, can you slide up your arm when the squirrel goes up the tree? And then back
down? Let’s try that!”
- **Up and down arms**
- Let us chase the squirrel, up the hickory, down the hickory, let us chase the squirrel, up
the hickory tree.

4) Add to Aux. Percussion


Slide up/down instrument now
**Have Glocks already positioned at #1 of the R side of the room**
- Have students at #1 go get mallets
“Now let’s add what we’ve learned to our instrument.”
- **Slide up and down Glockenspiels**
- Let us chase the squirrel, up the hickory, down the hickory, let us chase the squirrel, up
the hickory tree.

5) Both parts play now (4 times for everyone to get a chance)


L side (Xylos)
R side (Glock)
- Rotate by number order (1>2>3>4>1)

Assessment:
- Are they actively participating by singing and/or playing their instruments?
- Are they playing their instruments respectfully?
- Are students playing xylos with half notes or all over the place?

Transition - “Awesome job today boys and girls! Please return your mallets to the bin on the
side of the classroom quickly and quietly.”
