Lesson
Digital Painting
Digital painting is a new medium that lets us create beautiful artwork, without the
messiness of painting with inks or oils. It still requires many of the same skills and
techniques as traditional, but it’s also easier in many ways. It is also a fun hobby, one that
you will enjoy for years. You can even make a living with digital painting. It can also
become a career after gaining enough confidence in producing digital paintings.

Your ability to draw is only one part of being a good digital painter. Being able to prepare
everything else needed to get across your ideas with your brush and to add the details that
make your painting stand out is equally important.

Preparing for Digital Painting

Recall lessons on the effective use of elements of art such as, color, shape, value, texture,
volume, space, and form. Likewise, revisit lessons on how you can stablish unity and variety
with your work through the application of the principles of art such as, balance, contrast, and
emphasis. Whether an artwork done by hands or using a computer, the elements and
principles of art are still applied.

In the digital painting shown below, for example, the artist places the subject far but drawn at
the viewers’ eye level and center. Trees both sides of the frame help the viewers to
concentrate their gaze to where it is supposed to be. The artist also used varied sizes and
height of the trees, added textures, and limited the number of colors to create a simple and

unified painting. These elements and principles of art still matter even in digital art.

Set your Equipment and Tools

Setting your art-work you need a basic of hardware like:

 Computer or Laptop – You need a computer and operating system to run on to create
a digital painting.
 Printer – It is absolutely needed to print digital painting.

Microsoft Paint and its Functions

Many kinds of computer software are available to get started to digital painting. Some
programs are downloadable or open source (Paint) and can be learned easily such as,
Gimp, Adode Photoshop, Krita, Procreate, etc. The picture below shows the paint software.

Title Bar – This shows the name of the image open on the canvas (or “untitled” if unnamed)
and the paint net version number.
Menu Bar – This area houses seven menus on the left and six utility icons on the right.
Tool Bar – Immediately below the Menu Bar is the Tool Bar. This houses several buttons
and controls for executing common commands and accessing various paint net
features. On the second rank are the adjustable parameters for the active tool is
shown.

5
Canvas – This is where the image is shown and edited. All drawings, selecting and other
editing actions occur here.
Color Window – This is the primary area for selecting and managing colors. It contains
several controls for adjusting colors and opacity.

Status Bar – It shows the current status of MS-Paint.

MS Paint Tools and Its Functions

Microsoft Paint has an assortment of painting

Tools that you can use for drawing shapes and
applying color to areas of your image in various
ways. You switch between tools by clicking on the
appropriate Icon on the Toolbar, which is located on
the left side of the Paint window.

Selection tool - These tools are used to select

portions of the image you’re working with. These
selections can then be moved around, copied, or
edited without affecting the rest of the image.

The Eraser tool is simple to use. Just click on it to

select it, then click on the part of the image that you
want to erase.

The Fill tool applies color (or "paint") to a large area

of the image. The Icon for the Fill Tool resembles a
pouring jar of paint. Just like if you were pouring a
liquid in real life, the Fill Tool’s "paint" will fill an
area’s shape with color.

The Eyedropper tool has only one function, but it

is a useful one. The eyedropper can be used to
"pick up" colors that you’ve already used in an
image.

6
The Magnifying Glass, or Zoom tool, can be
used to get a closer, more detailed view of an
image. This is very useful if you’re working in
close with the fine details of a part of an image.

The Pencil tool is your basic drawing tool. You can

draw in different colors, but other than that there are
no other options.

The Text tool is used to position and enter text into

your image. The text may be of any color or font
that you have active on your computer.

The Straight Line tool is pretty easy to work with.

You can change the color and width of your lines by
using the Toolbar Options.

The Curve tool is trickier to use than the Line tool.

It can be difficult to learn how to use, and it is
difficult to explain.

The Shapes tools are all very similar. These tools

are used for creating geometric shapes.
