Integration with Unequal Segments

Find the integral result of the following table.

x f(x) x f(x)
0.0 0.2000 0.44 2.8430
0.12 1.3097 0.54 3.5073
0.22 1.3052 0.64 3.1819
0.32 1.7434 0.70 2.3630
0.36 2.0749 0.80 0.2320
0.40 2.4560

Solution:
f ( x 0 ) + f (x 1) f ( x 1 ) + f ( x 2) f ( xn−1 ) + f (xn)
I =h 1 + h2 + …+hn
2 2 2

1.3097+ 0.2 1.3052+ 1.3097 f ( 0.2320 ) +f (2.3630)

I =0.12 +0.10 + …+0.10
2 2 2

I=0.0906+ 0.1307+…+0.1298=1.5948

Which represent an absolute % relative error of Et =2.8 %

The first segment is evaluated with the trapezoidal rule:

1.3097+0.2
I 1=0.12 =0.0906
2

Because the two segment from x = 0.12 to 0.32 are of equal length, their integral can be
computed with Simpson’s 1/3 rule:
1.7434+ 4 ( 1.3052 ) +1.3097
I 2=0.2 =0.2758
6
The next three segment are also equal and, as such, may be evaluated with the 3/8 rule
to give:
I 3=0.2727

Similarly, the 1/3 rule can be applied to the two segments from x= 0.44 to 0.64 to yield:
I 4=0.6685

Finally, the last two segment, which are of unequal length, can be evaluated with the
trapezoidal rule to give values of:
I 5=0.1663
I 6=0.1298

Summing all the segment integration:

I =0.0906+ 0.2758+0.2727+0.6685+0.1663+ 0.1298

I =1.6037
