Solution:

1. Loads acting on the foundation:

a.) Vertical load case: (1.4G+1.6Q) b.) Vertical and Horizontal load case: (G+Q+E)

Md=1.4Mg+1.6Mq= 1.4x78 + 1.6 x 50 = 189 kNm Md=Mg+Mq+Me = 78 + 50 + 103 = 231 kNm

Nd=1.4Ng+1.6Nq = 1.4 x 736 + 1.6 x 425 = 1710 kN Nd=Ng+Nq+Ne = 736 + 425 + 53 = 1214 kN
Vd= 1.4Vg+1.6Vq= 1.4 x 32 + 1.6 x 23 = 82 kN Vd= Vg+Vq+Ve = 32+ 23 + 53 = 108 kN

2. Dimensioning of the Symmetric Footing:

h=0.7 m ; Ly = 2 m ; A=Lx .Ly=2 Lx ; W= Ly .Lx2/6 =Lx2/3
qk = 420 = 300 kN/m2
Design bearing capacity of the foundation: q =
t  Rv 1.4
a) Vertical load case (1.4G+1.6Q):
qt,net= qt-ɣt .h  qt,net = 300 – 1.4 x 20 x 1.25 = 265kN/m2
Md=1.4Mg+1.6Mq= 1.4x78 + 1.6 x 50 = 189 kNm
Nd=1.4Ng+1.6Nq = 1.4 x 736 + 1.6 x 425 = 1710 kN
Vd= 1.4Vg+1.6Vq= 1.4 x 32 + 1.6 x 23 = 82 kN
Values at the gravity center of the foundation base:
M0=M+h.V= 189 + 0.7 x 82 =246 kNm
N0=1710 kN

5. Sliding of the foundation in the horizontal plane:

According to TBDY(2018), under static and seismic load conditions, the design value of the sliding
force (Vth) beneath the foundation should be less than the sliding capacity.

Vth ≤ Rth+0.3 Rpt

Here, Rth is the design friction resistance between the foundation and the subgrade and Rpt is the
design passive resistance.

Vth=108 kN

Under drained conditions, design friction resistance can be calculated by considering the design
vertical compression force Ptv, the tan δ friction coefficient between the foundation and the
subgrade (considered as 0.5 according to TBDY 2018 Table 16.3, friction with a concrete subgrade
and γRh =1.1 (Table 16.2):

Ptv tan 1214 0.5

Rth =  Rh
= = 551kN
1.1

Even the design friction resistance Rth is greater than design sliding force Vth. Consequently, the
sliding safety is satisfied even without considering the Rpt design passive resistance.
