Konkan railways: Electric all the way

On March 30, 2022, Prime Minister complimented Konkan Railways for electrifying 100
percent of the zone, saying the zone's track set new standards for sustainable growth. The entire
741 km track between Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur in Karnataka, which was laid in
November 2015, has already been electrified by Konkan Railway. This electrification project
will cost Rs 1,287 million. In March 2020, the CRS inspected the entire Konkan Railways route
in six sections, and the last part of the Konkan Railways between Ratnagiri and Thivim was
inspected on March 24, 2022, and approved on March 28, 2022. Because of the Konkan's
climate and the Covid-19 epidemic, electrification has been challenging. Furthermore, due to
heavy rains in the region, specific measures were made in a number of locations to ensure that
the electrification operation could continue uninterrupted.
Electric traction has various advantages, according to the Konkan Railway zone, including
significant fuel cost savings of more than Rs 1.5 billion, pollution-free mode of transportation,
trouble-free operation of electric traction on the West Coast, and reduced reliance on HSD oils.
The Konkan Railway Zone is one of the largest railway routes in India, and electric traction
trains will be phased out on the newly electrified KR route.

MoIB transfers mandate to NFDC

A PSU under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the National Film
Development Corporation (NFDC), has been mandated to produce documentaries,
short films, and organise film festivals. Thus, increased synergy and a concentrated
worldwide outreach would be achieved by consolidating the organisation of many
national and international film festivals. The National Film Archives of India's
preservation efforts have been moved to the NFDC as well. NFDC will now
undertake the National Film Heritage Mission to digitise and restore films.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting is the nodal Ministry for the audio
visual service sector, one of the 12 Champion Service sectors selected by the
Department of Commerce. As part of its efforts to encourage creative and technical
services, the government allowed financial incentives for audio-visual co-
productions with other nations as well as international film production in India. The
NFDC's Film Facilitation Office will also drive this initiative.
Overall, the Indian government has budgeted Rs. 1304.52 crore for NFDC to
undertake all of these operations through 2026. This decision was made to
strengthen the NFDC. That the Corporation will be able to use current
infrastructure and employees more efficiently.
With the aim of ensuring synergy, convergence of activities, and better use of
resources, the Union Cabinet decided in December 2020 to merge four of its film
media units: Films Division, Directorate for Film Festivals, NFA, and Children's
Film Society of India

BIMSTEC summit and concerns towards international order

The BIMSTEC secretariat received $1 million from PM Narendra Modi during the fifth summit. The
Prime Minister joins the 5th BIMSTEC Summit via video conference. India is BIMSTEC's only
member.
On March 30th, recent developments in Europe have questioned the stability of the global system. 1
million dollars for the BIMSTEC secretariat from India He questioned Russia's attack on Ukraine,
worried about the world order. In this context, BIMSTEC regional coordination is vital.
Summit accepts BIMSTEC charter, formalising aims and principles Modi called it a major step
toward institutionalisation. Now we must reinforce this architecture.
Following the Secretary General's suggestion, Modi formed an eminent people committee to prepare
a vision document. A strategy should be developed to enhance the BIMSTEC Secretariat. BIMSTEC
is the world's second most populated area, with a $3.8 trillion GDP. The notion of a free trade deal
must be promoted.
The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) will also launch an
ADB campaign (ADB).

Chinese FM visit to India might Resolve LAC

crisis

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India and met with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit
Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar after his trip to Kabul.
The key topic of discussion was the dispute over eastern Ladakh, as well as the geopolitical
implications of the crisis in Ukraine. It was the highest-level visit between the two countries, which
followed two years of strained ties following the military standoff in eastern Ladakh. The border
issue played a prominent role in the meeting, since the two have been serving as Special
Representatives (SR) for the boundary talks between the two countries.
The two sides agreed that continuing with the present situation was not in the mutual interest of both
countries and that bringing back peace and tranquillity would help to build mutual trust and create an
enabling environment for relations to progress. They also agreed that working in the same direction
and resolving outstanding issues as quickly as possible, ensuring that actions do not violate the spirit
of equality and mutual security, is in the best interest of both countries. Following the talks, both
sides have already withdrawn troops from some of the friction points.
To carry forward the mandate of the SRs, the Chinese side has invited NSA Doval to visit China.
Responding positively to the invitation, the NSA declared he would be able to visit if the immediate
issues could be resolved.
The 15th round of high-level military dialogue between India and China took place on March 11 to
resolve the pending issues in the eastern Ladakh region, which had made no advancement in the
negotiations. The Indian-Chinese border standoff erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash
in the Pangong lake region. The conflict escalated further after the clashes in the Galwan Valley on
June 15, 2020. The clashes claimed the lives of 20 Indian soldiers and an unspecified number of
Chinese soldiers. At present, each side has approximately 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of
Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector.

India and Mexico discuss collaboration in

traditional medicine

Mexico's Foreign Minister, Mr Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, met Ayush Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal. The
Mexican FM led a group that discussed collaboration in the field of traditional medicine and Ayush systems.
In his remarks, Ayush Minister highlighted the centuries-old friendship and friendly relations between India
and Mexico. Its people, culture, and family values are strikingly similar.
Ayush means life and encompasses Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy. India has
regulated Ayurveda and other Indian traditional systems for over 50 years. India successfully linked these
systems to accomplish the UN's Universal Health Coverage. Ayurveda is now accepted as a system of
Traditional Medicine in over 30 nations worldwide. It is exported to over 100 countries.
India's traditional medicine is now recognised globally. Seeing the need for a global centre for traditional
medicine, the WHO and the Ministry of Ayush signed a host nation agreement on March 25, 2022 in Geneva.
This is the first and only global hub for traditional medicine, which will encourage traditional medicine
research and development.
During the COVID pandemic, India has done tremendous effort for the mitigation of Covid-19 by big scale
involvement of Ayurveda and other AYUSH systems. Medicines like Ayush 64, a Ministry of Ayush
formulation, have been widely used in Covid morbidities and can benefit the Mexican public.
I suggest a country-level MoU between the Mexican Ministry of Health and the Ayush Ministry for
Traditional Medicine cooperation. The MoU between academic institutes will benefit the citizens of both
countries. India can always help Mexico train its people in traditional medicine.
The Union Minister also invited Mexico's Foreign Minister to the Global Ayush Investment & Innovation
Summit in Gujarat from April 22-24, 2022.

India developed self-disinfection masks that protect against

infection by 99.9%

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh
claimed India has developed copper based nanoparticle coatings on fabric which may be
utilised as self-disinfection masks which offer 99.9% protection against infection.
Dr Jitendra Singh said the unique mask was created by ARCI, Hyderabad, Centre for Cellular
& Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, and Resil Chemicals Pvt Ltd, Bangalore.
The Minister said that ARCI has constructed a Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) processing plant
to produce copper-based nanoparticles. A appropriate binder was used to apply a
homogeneous layer of this nano-coating to the cotton cloth. CCMB examined the coated
fabric's efficiency against SARS CoV2 and other viruses and germs.

Resil Chemicals Ltd, an industry partner, has created thousands of masks for testing and
certification. The mask cannot be compared to other masks on the market since their
technology is unknown.

Millions might be
saved against drug
resistant superbugs
with new antibiotics

A "game-changing" antibiotic discovered by UK scientists may be used

as a "final line of defence" against superbugs, potentially sparing
millions of lives from otherwise drug-resistant illnesses.
Researchers say they've identified new teixobactin versions that can
destroy germs without hurting mammals.
Scientists say the present endeavor has developed "synthetic" types of
the drug.
The University of Liverpool researchers showed that these versions
could destroy a wide spectrum of germs from human patients.
They also destroyed MRSA, a superbug resistant to several standard
antibiotics, in mice studies.
Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections killed over 1.2 million people in
2019, according to The Lancet.
Less frequent teixobactin doses may be used in the future to treat
systemic, life-threatening resistant bacterial infections.
The synthetic equivalents may likewise be stored at room temperature,
decreasing the need for cold chains and allowing for worldwide
distribution.

India in talks with the EU, Australia, UK, Canada,
Israel and others for FTA negotiations.

Minister of State for Textiles, Smt. Darshana

Jardosh, addressed the Lok Sabha on March 30th
that India and UAE recently inked a Free Trade
Agreement, which will likely enhance Indian textile
and apparel exports. India is currently negotiating
FTAs with the EU, Australia, the UK, Canada,
Israel, and others.
India has a tariff disadvantage in some markets
including the EU and the UK compared to
competitors like Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Sri
Lanka. The Government, through its Market Access
Initiative (MAI) plan, assists different Export
Promotion Councils (EPCs) and Trade Bodies in
organising and participating in trade fairs, exhibits,
buyer-seller meetings, etc. In addition, during the
COVID-19 epidemic, EPCs organised virtual shows
as a marketing option to target worldwide markets.

To keep textile goods cost competitive, the government has extended the
RoSCTL on exports of Apparel/Garments (Chapters 61 & 62) and Made-
ups (Chapter 63) until 31st March 2024. In addition to other items, non-
RoSCTL textiles (except Chapters 61, 62, and 63) are covered by
Remissions of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP).
It was introduced in January 2016 to provide a one-time capital incentive
for approved benchmark gear. Capital subsidies are available for high
employment and export potential segments including garmenting and
technological textiles. The Ministry of Textiles is implementing Samarth-
Scheme for Capacity Building in Textiles Sector (SCBTS) throughout the
whole value chain of textiles except Spinning and Weaving in the
organised sector. To create an integrated workspace and linkages-based
ecosystem for existing and potential textile units to make them
operationally and financially viable, the Ministry is implementing Textile
Cluster Development Scheme (TCDS) from 2021-22 to 2025-26. A
Manufacture Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Textiles has also been
developed to boost the production of MMF Apparel, MMF Fabrics, and
MMF Products.

ENVIRONMENT
The first Indian Steel Slag road

Diamond City Surat has the world's first steel road made of steel scrap. The
CSIR and CRRI funded the effort. In the future, discarded steel may be a more
durable and cost-effective way to build roadways. In Surat's Hazira industrial
sector, a road created from scrap steel is the first of its kind in India.
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has built India's first "steel slag road" in
partnership with CSIR India, CRRI, and government think tank Niti Aayog. In
Hazira, Surat, 100% processed steel slag aggregates in all layers of bituminous
roads.
The company said that they were glad to help establish a National Highway
blueprint and that it was an honour to be a part of this distinguished project
that uses only 100% processed steel slags. The steel industry is worried about
metallurgical and metal-processing waste disposal for a variety of reasons.
Another problem is steel slag, which is considered a waste product. When it
comes to metallurgical and metal-processing waste, landfills are particularly
harmful to the environment. As a natural building material substitute, processed
steel slag aggregate shows a lot of promise. Steel mills will be offered a
technology for crushing slag into suitable aggregate sizes.

JOB AND CAREER

9 Best Skills to Learn for the Future

1. Artificial intelligence
You don’t need to work in the artificial intelligence (AI) field to expect to encounter AI in your
workplace.
Software like hyper automation and business intelligence, both examples of process automation
enhanced by artificial intelligence, regularly rank among some of the top business technology
trends lists. These technologies are being employed across digitally transformed companies, which
now account for approximately 70% of businesses.
These technologies are transforming the way businesses function, enhancing the need for
employees with artificial intelligence experience across industries.
Developing artificial intelligence skills isn’t something that happens overnight, but is sure to be
valuable in any company. The first step to understanding artificial intelligence is to learn how it’s
developed. This is key to learning how to manipulate and inform artificial intelligence. Once you
have the development skills necessary, you’ll have the ability to interact with and learn AI skills.

2. Coding
Coding has quickly become one of the most sought after skills people can learn. Computing
languages serve a variety of purposes and can be applied to almost any job. At this point, coding
has become so dominant across industries that experts argue that coding might soon be a basic life
skill.
Learning to code is one skill that could take some time. The specific computing language you want
to become literate in will determine how long it takes you to learn to code.

3. Cloud computing
Cloud computing is a safe way to store and manage company data that also enables remote access
to company platforms.
If you develop cloud computing skills, you offer the ability to advise your employer on how to
best manage their cloud. From remote data storage to multi-cloud computing, understanding the
different aspects of the cloud and its possible uses will make you valuable to any company.
Developing cloud computing alongside valuable project management skills can help you secure
your career in organizing and managing company processes.

4. Blockchain
You don’t have to work in finance for blockchain to be relevant to your workplace. Blockchain is
characterized as a solution in search of problems, making it a desirable skill for employees to
have.
If you already understand cryptocurrency and trading, you likely have blockchain skills in place.
Consider reading different blockchain blogs that further explain how the technology works and can
be applied in your company.
To get familiar with blockchain in real life, start by getting a bitcoin address and a crypto wallet.

5. UX design
The internet continues to grow as the main source for consumers to find information and
products. While it’s important for companies to host a website so that consumers can find them
and their products, it doesn’t matter unless they can keep consumers on their site.
Having UX design skills shows employers that you are invested in ensuring users have a good
experience. Companies value this skill and mindset, as it proves to be applicable across the
board.

6. Critical thinking
Companies look for critical thinking skills in their employees because critical thinking indicates
the ability to solve both vague and complex problems.
Management can’t always direct your workflow, which means when you run into problems, it’s
likely you’ll need to take on the task yourself.
Strong critical thinking skills enable you to find a solution to almost any problem that arises in
your daily work. Companies want to know that their workers can handle problems independently,
which is why they desire workers with strong critical thinking skills.
Critical thinking is a skill that takes self-discipline to further develop. Try thinking “outside of
the box” and regularly approach problems from different perspectives. Doing so will help you
practice thinking critically about problems and situations.

7. Emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence has been described in several ways, but to most, it explains a person’s
ability to recognize their own emotions and the emotions of others.
Companies look for emotional intelligence in workers because it signifies strong interpersonal
skills. Employees that have strong emotional intelligence will be able to communicate, debate,
and disagree without the situation getting out of control.
Emotional intelligence isn’t a skill that can be developed overnight. This soft skill takes time
and plenty of attention to your surroundings. Luckily, there are online courses that help you
develop your awareness of coworkers' body language.

8. Communication
Communication skills are important for employees at any level within a company to have.
Effective communication is essential to company-wide success. Companies where leaders possess
strong communication skills are reportedly making a 47% higher return, compared to competitors
with poor communication.
Companies desire employees with effective communication skills, including verbal and written,
to increase revenue return rates.
You can develop your communication skills by learning how to effectively speak to groups and
individuals through online and in-person soft skill development courses.

9. Leadership
Possessing strong leadership skills means that you know how to effectively motivate and direct
others, setting up your entire team for success. Companies look for leadership skills in
employees to promote a successful team and organization.
Research has shown that it’s more beneficial for companies to promote internally, rather than
hiring externally. This means that when it comes to leadership opportunities, companies are more
likely to promote their employees to those positions.
If you want to secure a career within your company, it’s important to always be developing
leadership and team development skills to keep you moving up the ladder.
