Footnote 2: 4 Gbps speeds requires the use of an 16 Gbps Brocade branded SFP. 1 & 2
Gbps speeds are not supported.

Revision 1118 2-5

HW6-120 Gen 6 Switch Hardware

Additional Condor4 Features

• 1.74 Tbps of data switching bandwidth per ASIC
• Layer 2 latency of 700ns
• Integrated in-flight encryption (64 Gbps) and compression (64 Gbps)
• Auto-detection of fill word on links (IDLE vs ARB)
• Supports up to 40 virtual channels.
• 15360 total available BB credits per ASIC. The number of user accessible buffer credits
vary depending on the type of platform the ASIC is installed in. Use the
portbuffershow command to see available credits.

Forward Error Correction (FEC)

Per Fibre Channel standards, Forward Error Correction (FEC) is always enabled at 32 Gbps
or higher link speeds. FEC is a system of error control for data transmissions, whereby the
sender adds error-correcting code (ECC) to its transmission. This allows the receiver to
detect and correct errors without the need to ask the sender for additional data. The FEC
implementation can enable corrections of up to 11 error bits in every 2,112 bit transmission.
FEC can be enabled or disabled using the portcfgfec command for links running below
32 Gbps.
Footnote 1: FL_Ports are not supported on the Condor4 ASIC. Mirror, SIM and Diagnostic
ports are used with Brocade’s Flow Vision features.
Footnote 2: 4 Gbps speeds requires the use of an 16 Gbps Brocade branded SFP. 1 & 2
Gbps speeds are not supported.

For additional information on Brocade transceiver optics visit our website:

modules/index.page
SFPs (Small Form Pluggable) ship in a variety of speeds with a number of different
standards in use for different applications. The SFP/SFP+ standards define the physical
specifications for the transceiver.
In addition to the physical specifications the SFP+ standard is used for transceivers that are
capable of 10 Gbps or greater transmission rates.
Footnote 1: QSFPs (Quad SFPs) are a transceiver design that allows for four separate
data paths through the transceiver and across an industry standard cable.

QSFP and cable

Revision 1118 2 - 42
HW6-120 Gen 6 Switch Hardware

The primary difference between SWL, LWL, and ELWL optics is the transmission frequency.
SWL uses a 850 nm laser, allowing for higher speeds over shorter distances. LWL and
ELWL transceivers use a 1310 nm laser across a single-mode fiber cable to allow for
transmission over longer distances than their SWL counterparts. LWL and ELWL optics are
similar in design; however, ELWL lasers use a higher powered laser in order to increase the
maximum transmission distance.
Note: Ethernet optical transceivers are referred to as SR (Short Reach) or LR (Long
Reach). They are not interchangeable with Fibre Channel optics.

Revision 1118 2 - 43
HW6-120 Gen 6 Switch Hardware

Fibre optic cable is the primary medium for carrying Fibre Channel signals. A typical cable
consists of a core, which acts as the transmission medium, surrounded by the cladding..
The cladding may then be surrounded by strengthening fibers or additional materials
designed to add strength to the cable and protect the core/cladding from damage. Finally
the cable is surrounded by a jacket (or sheath).

Revision 1118 2 - 44
HW6-120 Gen 6 Switch Hardware

Fiber cables are grouped into two main categories based on their core diameter and
transmission characteristics.
• Multi-mode fiber — Uses a core size of 62.5 µm (OM1) or 50 µm (OM2/OM3/OM4).
These are the standard cables used with SWL type transceivers and are the most
prevalent within the data center.
• Single-mode fiber — Uses a core size of 9 µm and is the standard cable used with
LWL and ELWL type transceivers. Single-mode cable coupled with LWL or ELWL
transceivers can be used to achieve much greater distances than multi-mode
configurations.

Revision 1118 2 - 45
HW6-120 Gen 6 Switch Hardware

The table above offers a side-by-side comparison of the different types of Brocade Fibre
Channel optics available. For each optic the supported speeds, cable types, and maximum
distance are listed.
Footnote 1: The chart is a provides a sample of optics available from Brocade. In addition,
the distance shown in this table represents the maximum distance, with high quality cabling
rated for the distance, that is available at the maximum line speed of the transceiver.
Distances can actually be increased beyond what is listed by reducing transmission speed.
For a full list of supported optics, distances, speeds, and cable types please visit our
website: http://www.brocade.com/products/all/transceivers/product-details/transceiver-
modules/features.page.
Footnote 2: Uses an industry standard MPO 1x12 ribbon cable connector for ICL
connectivity or Industry-standard MTP 1×12 ribbon cable connector for ISLs or F_Ports
using optical breakout cable.
Footnote 3: Provides support for high throughput Inter-Switch Links (ISL) or Inter-Chassis
Links (ICL) using an industry standard MPO 1x12 ribbon cable connector.

HWG6-120 Gen 6 Director Hardware

The arrow in the above diagram represents the general airflow path through the chassis for
blade cooling. Air is drawn into or exits the non-port side by the blowers or exhausted out or
enters the side of the chassis depending on airflow direction.
The X6-4 can be installed in equipment racks that support side exhaust. If side
exhaust/intake is not supported by the rack, there is a rack mount package available to
divert the side exhaust/intake to the front of the rack. The package is called the Port Side air
Kit, and was developed for and tested with major OEM equipment racks. With the shelf at
1U, a total of 9U rack space is required to install the shelf and the X6-4.

Revision 1118 3 - 16
HWG6-120 Gen 6 Director Hardware

The Port Side Air Kit contains two main components: the duct (mounted to the side of the
rack), and the shelf (mounted below the chassis). Additional brackets are available to be
attached to the side exhaust kit for installation in rack mounts to support varying rack mount
depths.
With the Port Side Kit installed air is redirected to or pulled from the front of the chassis.
Airflow is diverted from the side of the chassis up to the power supply exhaust and down to
the air channel in the 1U shelf.

Footnote 1: Prior to 8.0.1 release, only ICL ISLs were counted for license enforcement. In
case of only Gen-6 platforms, there is no restriction on the number of switches that can be
connected via ICL. In case of only Gen-5 platforms, if no EICL license is present, only 3
other direct chassis are allowed to connect (total 4).
In the case of 16-Gbps Gen 5 platforms, if EICL license is present, maximum of 9 chassis
are allowed to connect (total of 10). The limit on the number of chassis depends only on the
physical chassis and not on the logical switches.
