PRE-OPERATION CHECK 17

PRE-OPERATION CHECK
To prevent trouble, it is important that you always know the conditions of the combine well. Never fail to perform the daily
check once in a day before starting the operation. (See page 64 after for inspection and adjustment details.)

To avoid personal injury:

A When performing the inspection, park the combine in a safe place with flat level surface, always stop the
engine and apply the parking brake.
A Keep flames away when checking, recharging or replacing the battery.
A Before adjusting, inspecting and replacing each section, be sure to stop the engine, set all levers to [OFF]
position and stop the rotary parts.
A Reinstall the all removed covers on any rotating part after the inspection to prevent part of your clothing
from being caught in.

To avoid personal injury:

A Keep flames away when replenishing fuel or oil.
A Before operation, perform the daily check for brake, clutch and safety device. Replace any worn off or
damaged parts. Also, periodically check the bolts and nuts for looseness.
A Before using the combine, make sure that there is a specified quantity of oil or fuel.
A Thoroughly wipe off fuel or oil spills, if any.
A If there is dust, fuel spill or mud on the battery or muffler, in the engine, fuel tank or belt cover, or around
the wires, a fire may break out. Remove it during a daily check.
A When you clean the cutting blade or oil the combine, wear gloves and use caution not to get injured with
the blade edges.

Oiling and changing oil

A When checking the oil level, park the combine on a flat ground. The gauge will read an incorrect value if the combine
is tilted.
A For the engine oil, transmission oil or grease, be sure to use the specified Kubota Oil and Grease products.
A Avoid dust or water when refilling fuel.

C Something unusual at the end of the previous day

When anything unusual was found at the end of the previous day, check the combine for trouble before using it.

C Walking around the combine

4 times the truck bed height. (See page 30.)
Select an area where the bridges do not tilt due
to the weight of the combine. Also place them
at the right angle to a ridge.
A When using non-skid bridges, travel at the
lowest speed in the direction perpendicular to
a ridge or slope using the forward mode for
uphill or the backward mode for downhill.
Diagonal travel may cause a fall and an injury.
A When traveling backward, ensure safety in the
rear direction. If there is a brook (irrigation

C How to operate under adverse conditions
When you are forced to harvest crops with high moisture
content or immature crops with still green stalks, apply the
slower reaping speed than normal. Also check the

BOperation in a Wet Field

To avoid personal injury:

A In the event of trouble, be sure to stop the engine before taking measures.
A If the combine is tilted greatly, the co-operator must get off. The combine may turn over and personal
injury may be caused.

When performing the reaping operation in a wet field, carefully check the crop conditions (inclination angle, etc.) and field
conditions (mud, ups and downs, etc.). In the event of trouble, take measures as shown in the following table.
Problem Measures
The combine slips. Perform reaping operation at low speed.
The combine sinks and gets Avoid making many turns on the same spot.
stuck. Do not make a snap turn.
The combine tilts. (Operate the power steering lever inch by inch and take a large turn.)
Do not make a sudden start.
In an area where water is pooled or deep, such as a water intake, reduce the combine
weight before reaping.
(Take grains out of the grain hopper.)
The reaper section is clogged. Apply proper reaping method suitable for the crop and field.
(See pages 33, 34 and 52.)
Inclined crops should be reaped slowly. (When harvesting long stalk crops with
reverse reaping, in particular, ear tips are apt to be raked into the reaper section
before the crops are reaped, making it easier to obstruct the reaper section.)
Remove straws or mud. (Feeder entrance or feeder conveyor sections)
Slow down the reaping speed.
Perform skip-reaping. (Control the volume of crops to be reaped.)

A If the combine fails to travel or gets stuck in a wet field, do not take the following operation and measures. This is
because otherwise the combine itself may get in trouble or the crawlers may get damaged.
Do not try the main gear shift lever for 10 seconds or longer at the forward and backward positions as well. Do not
move the lever repeatedly forward and backward, either. (Moving this lever damages the hydrostatic transmission
and fails to drive the combine.)

<1> Combine <A> Failure to travel <1> Main gear shift lever <A> Do not move the lever for
<2> Field 10 seconds or longer

Do not put round or square bars under the crawlers in an attempt to move. (This may damage the crawler.)
46 HARVESTING

If the combine gets stuck in a wet field, be sure to call for a tow car to pull the combine out of it.
To get the combine out of the wet field, apply wires or the like to the rope hooks (See page 31.) or the tow hook at
the back of the combine and pull out the combine slowly using a wreck vehicle, such as heavy-duty machine. When
using a wreck vehicle, drive the vehicle straight with the combine. Zigzagging or the like may get the rope hooks or
the tow hook on the combine damaged, thereby failing to pull out the combine.

If it is impossible to pull out the combine with a wreck vehicle as it is, use non-skid bridges or the like to put the
combine in a pull-out position. Remember to remove all mud off the crawlers beforehand, because otherwise the
crawlers may skid, failing to tow the combine.

<4> Cap

<1> Reserve tank <A> [FULL] (upper limit)

<2> Cap <B> [LOW] (lower limit)

A When the coolant level becomes low due to normal

evaporation, only add fresh water. Adding antifreeze
will increase its mixing ratio, resulting in a trouble with
the engine or radiator.
A If fresh water is unavailable, boil tap water for 30
minutes or so and use it. Never use any contaminated
water taken from river, pond or well, nor rain water.
The engine may get into trouble.

A Never add water above the [FULL] (upper limit) mark.

108 MAINTENANCE

3. After fitting the drain plug, put antifreeze into the

radiator and the reserve tank in the percentage
(mixing ratio) for a target temperature (ambient
temperature).

A Failure to observe the proper mixing ratio of antifreeze

may cause freezing of coolant in winter as well as
engine trouble or radiator damage in summer.
A When using antifreeze, do not add any radiator
cleaning agent. As antifreeze contains preservative,
mixture of cleaning agent will have adverse effect on
engine components.
A Kubota's genuine antifreeze (Long-life Coolant) has a
service life of 2 years. Be sure to change the coolant
every 2 years.
A Failure to tighten the drain plug will cause water
leakage, resulting in overheated engine.

A Antifreeze works to lower the freezing temperature of

the coolant in order to prevent engine failure due to
frozen coolant under extremely low temperature.
A Mixing ratio of antifreeze will increase as ambient
temperature decreases. Consult your dealer and
determine the mixing ratio referring to the table below.
Use the ethylene glycol (EG) type Long-life Coolant.

FOREIGN MATTERS STUCK ON THE

RADIATOR FINS
BHow to Clean the Radiator

To avoid personal injury:

A Before cleaning the radiator, always stop the
engine and wait until it cools down. You may
get burned.
A If the radiator cap is opened during running or
immediately after stop of the engine, extremely
hot water may gush out to get you burnt.
A Do not add different types of antifreeze.

Even if the engine room side cover and the dust-proof net
of the radiator have been cleaned up, the coolant
temperature alarm indicator may light up and the warning
buzzer may start sounding. In such case, stop the
operation and the combine. Now clean up the engine
room side cover's dust-proof net and the radiator itself.
(See page 113 for cleaning the engine room side cover's
dust-proof net.)
It is also advisable to clean up the radiator after the
reaping season and keep it clean for the next season.

A Before cleaning the above parts, move the combine to

a suitable place.

1. Stop the engine, wait longer than 30 minutes and

make sure the radiator coolant has cooled down. Let
all the coolant out of the radiator. (See page 107.)
2. Open the engine room side cover (See page 64.) first
and then the radiator fin dust-proof cover.
3. Dismount the radiator from the combine.
(1) Remove the lock bolts from the radiator on the
combine.
(2) Loosen the clips and bands (3 locations) from the
radiator hoses. Disconnect all these hoses from
the radiator.

<1> Radiator <4> Clip

<2> Reserve tank <5> Band
<3> Hose <6> Bolt

A Before undoing the lower hose bands, preferably

remove the upper bolts and disconnect the hose, and
tilt down the radiator slightly toward yourself. It helps
undo these bands easily.

6. Wipe and clean up the radiator

(1) Prepare a container to put the radiator in. Pour a A Be careful not to touch the radiator fins. Otherwise
suitable amount of water and neutral detergent. they may get deformed, possibly resulting in poor
radiator cooling performance or failing to remove mud
and dirt from the fins.
A The container should be cylindrical and large enough
to put the radiator. Its size should be 50 cm or more in
diameter and 80 cm or more in height.

(2) Place the radiator in the container and hold the

top of the radiator with both hands. Turn the
radiator clockwise and counterclockwise several
times to shake out mud and dirt. During this
action, be careful to keep your hands off the soft
radiator fins.

container. It helps remove mud or chaffs that are stuck
on the radiator fins.

<2> Container <B> Alternately

A Preferably turn the radiator quickly, and mud and dirt

could be efficiently removed.

engine running, the reel slightly being raised and the
threshing clutch lever being set to [ON] (On) position.
4. Pull the reaper counter clutch lever strongly and clear
foreign matters.

A If the reaper section gets jammed with foreign matters

or the reaper section and/or the feeder conveyor
section, immediately move the reaping clutch lever to
