Theoretical Frame In B.Naghavi and R.F.Malones study if fine sand and silt
Work filtration can be used to remove algae it is stated that
to determine the potential of a method of filtering
algae from water using fine sand/silt as the filter
media. Five median sand sizes (0.064–0.335 mm) and four
bed depths (3.175–12.700 mm) were examined in constant
head experiments with the algae Scenedesmus
quadricauda. A total of 46 experiments were conducted
with continuous measurements of filtration rate, head
loss and effluent quality. All media with median sand
sizes at or below 0.200 mm gave consistently high algae
removal rates. The average removal was 97.27% (based on
fluorescence) with a low average initial head loss
across the filter media of 7.3 cm (median grain size
diameter of 0.200 mm with the bed depth of 3.175 mm).
Initial filtration rates obtained in the experimental
apparatus were as high as 226 m3 m−2–day−1 (3.84 gpm
ft−2), comparable to conventional sand units. Run times
were short due to surface clogging of the media. No
chemical addition was required to obtain high removal
levels.
The solution of Joel Bleth by using mechanical circulation as a way to win the
algae battle. Bleth’s solution is most effective way of circulating algae
because Good green algae and diatoms have two major advantages over blue-
green algae: they start growing earlier in the season, and they reproduce many
times faster than blue-green algae. So, how do you give good green algae and
diatoms a leg up, so to speak, so that they remain dominant all year? The
answer lies in keeping them suspended in the water column. Wind mixing
helps, but even lakes in very windy regions still have blue-green algae HABs.
This is where solar-powered radial long distance circulators come into play.
These machines, usually set to horizontally circulate just the upper six to eight
feet of the lake, have been proven to keep the green algae and diatoms
sufficiently suspended to remain viable and dominant in the lake throughout
the season, regardless of how many nutrients are in the lake. With the good
algae's fast reproduction and fast uptake of the nutrients, blue-green algae
never gets enough traction to take over the lake and form a HAB. The main
definition of bleths study is the purpose of a circulator is not to add oxygen to
a lake. That’s the work of good green algae and diatoms. The purpose of a
circulator is to help the good green algae and diatoms survive and thrive all
season, so that blue-green algae can not get enough nutrients or traction to
form a HAB. When the good algae survive, the levels of algae, zooplankton,
fish, dissolved oxygen and pH will stay in balance all season, and the lake is
free of HABs. The lake has much better water clarity, a “clear” indication that
water quality has been restored.
