Exercise Sheet 6 – Lectures 12 and 13
(Submission date 8th of January)

1. Find the value 𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 at the point (1, -1. -3) if the equation
xz + ylnx -x2 + 4 = 0
defines x as a function of the two independent variables y and z and the partial derivative exists.

2. An important partial differential equation that describes the distribution of heat in a region at
time t can be represented by the one-dimensional heat equation

𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝜕𝜕 2 𝑓𝑓
=
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 𝜕𝜕𝑥𝑥 2

Show that 𝑢𝑢(𝑥𝑥, 𝑡𝑡) = sin(𝛼𝛼𝛼𝛼) · 𝑒𝑒 −𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏 satisfies the heat equation for constants a and b. What is the
relationship between a and b for this function to be a solution?

3. The temperature T(x,y) in oC at a point (x,y) satisfies Tx(1,2)=3 and Ty(1,2)=-1 (Tx, Ty partial
derivatives). If x=e2t-2 (cm) and y=2 + lnt (cm), find the rate at which the temperature Y changes
when t=1 sec.

4. The lengths a, b and c of the edges of a rectangular box are changing with time. At the instant
when a=1m, b=2m and c=3m, da/dt=db/dt=1 m/sec and dc/dt=-3m/sec. At what rates are the box’s
volume V and surface S changing at this instant?

5. Is there a direction 𝑢𝑢 in which the rate of change of the temperature function T(x, y, z) = 2xy –
yz (T in oC, distance in m) at P(1,-1,1) is 3 oC/m? Give reasons for your answer.

6. Find the a) and b) the
𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 𝑥𝑥 𝜕𝜕𝜕𝜕 𝑧𝑧
at the point (w, x, y, z) = (4, 2, 1, -1) if w=x2y2 + yz – z3 and x2 + y2 + z2 = 6

7. If a=10cm and b=16cm to the nearest millimeter, what should you expect the maximum
percentage error to be in the calculated area A = πab of the eclipse x2/a2 + y2/b2 = 1

8. What is the largest value that the directional derivative of f(x, y, z) = xyz can have at the point (1,
1, 1)?
