The Influence of a Demanding Schedule and Workload on Students' Health at

STI College Caloocan

I. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study and Solution

Schoolworks is one of the primary problems of every student because of its effect on their
mental health. It became the top reason of the student's problem that led to stress, lack of sleep
and mentally unstable. As the pandemic happened, the learning system has changed. Online class
has been the best option to continue the education amidst the pandemic. Because of the "new
normal", limiting the social interactions between the students and teachers, schoolworks is the
only way for the students to be able to pass. Different educational platforms that have been
introduced, for the students and teachers to use. This is where the teachers put all the activities as
well as this is where the students will pass their activities.

As years passed, the government allowed the "traditional way" of learning which is the
"face-to-face" classes to some schools. The workload of the students is doubled because they
have activities done in school but are still required to do some activities in some educational
platforms. Students have frequently been portrayed as stressed-out citizens because of the heavy
academic load they endure. Stress is an emotional state that causes someone to feel uneasy and
unsatisfied with the circumstance they must deal with. In this instance, academic workloads
include assignments, classes, exams, quizzes, reports, and practicals that students, particularly
university students, must complete to pass. Heavy academic loads may generate stress and can
have an adverse effect on students' mental health if they continue for a prolonged period.

Explanation of the Alignment of the Funder’s Mission and the Writer’s Proposal

Students are still adjusting to the new normal after two years of online classes. When
face-to-face classes resumed, the students were both overwhelmed and astounded by the
changes. Students in STI College Caloocan experienced a variety of effects, particularly when
the fully face-to-face occurred, because not only is it a week of class, but it also has a massive
workload where some of the activities or tasks are assigned simultaneously. One of the factors
affecting students, particularly regarding the new normal system, is their environment. Plenty of
students are used to living at home and taking their classes online, so they must now adjust to it
while also returning to face-to-face instruction. Most students are affected by time because they
are expecting to attend a week of class while doing tasks for which they are struggling to
organize their time.

Because of the clashing schedule and enormous number of workloads, students of STI
College Caloocan often feel exhausted and burnt out due to it. The lack of sleep and rest may
lead to further problems regarding academic work ethics because of the misalignment and
contrary to the given schedule of student’s full face-to-face class and submissions of activities
and group tasks in eLMS or physically. To resolve this timely and relevant problem, The
arrangement of classes should be managed more accordingly by not giving hectic schedules due
to lack of rooms and teachers. Administration should be more considerate to its students by
managing the deadlines of submission by giving a longer period to make high-quality work
without relinquishing its health or proper rest. The management should also affix the students
mental, emotional, and physical health related problems caused by exhaustion as their one of the
primary concerns and not just with pure academic but a very draining academic system.
