Types Of Distribution System

Based on Power Line Construction:

When we classify distribution system based on power line then we have two overhead and underground
distribution system.

1. Overhead distribution system

It is the method of distributing electricity to consumers has been on wires

attached to poles high above the ground.

Underground distribution system

It is the method of distributing electricity to consumers through Underground
cables essentially consist of a conductor and an insulating system.
Comparison between overhead and underground distribution system
1. Overhead distribution system is cheaper to setup compare to underground
distribution system.
2. Overhead distribution system is easy to repair and maintain compare to
underground distribution system.
3.
4. Overhead distribution system is less safe compare to underground
distribution system.
5. Overhead distribution system is easily fault detection compare to
underground distribution system.
Based on network connection

When we classify distribution system based on network then we have three types radial, loop and
interconnected distribution system.

1. Radial distribution system

The Radial system is the cheapest to build, and is widely used in sparsely populated areas. A
radial system has only one power source for a group of consumers. A power failure or a short-
circuit would interrupt power in the entire line which must be fixed before power can be
restored.

1. Loop distribution system

The loop system is usually tied into an alternate power source. By placing switches in strategic
locations, the utility can supply power to the consumers from either direction. If one source of
power fails, switches are thrown and power can be fed to consumers from the other source.

1. Interconnected distribution system

It is interconnected to a transmission power system either directly or through

interconnection to a distribution power system. It is more difficult to design and operate
than radial or loop systems. It increases the reliability of supply.
