Background of the Study

Mathematics is the science and study of quality, structure, space, and
change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures, and
establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and
definitions(Tennessee Tech Education, 2022). Mathematics is one of the core
subjects that students are expected to have credit to further their studies in
institutions of higher learning (Adejunno, Ulowele & Muraina, 2015). In
order for the teachers to distinguish the knowledge capacity of the students
in Mathematics, a numeracy test will be given to the students.

A numeracy test, just like any other entrance examinations, is very

important for every junior high school students and teachers. Numeracy
tests can be the basis of what the students are lacking in the subject of
Mathematics. Numeracy test, as defined by AptitudeTests.org(2002), is the
most basic numerical aptitude test and is designed to assess the testee’s
ability to manipulate basic mathematical concepts without the help of a
calculator. Numeracy test is the most basic mathematical examination but
why are there only few students who get the perfect score?

Why do other students don’t get perfect scores when numeracy test
uses only basic mathematical operations? The researchers aim to search the
probability and frequency of the junior high school students from different
sections at the Mahaplag National High School in getting the perfect score
on the numeracy examination.

Statement of the Problem

1.Will the numeracy test affect the mathematical capacity of students?
2.Will the percentage of students who perfected the numeracy test be
more than 50% of the total population of junior high school students in
Mahaplag National High School?
Hypotheses
 Null Hypothesis:
Ho: The numeracy test will have an effect to the mathematical
capacity of students.

Ho: The percentage of students who perfected the numeracy test

will be more than 50% of the total population of junior high school
students in Mahaplag National High School.

Alternative Hypothesis:
Ha: The numeracy test will have no effect to the mathematical
capacity of students.

Ha: The percentage of students who perfected the numeracy test

will be less than 50% of the total population of junior high school
students in Mahaplag National High School.

Significance of the Study

The researchers conducted this study to provide enough knowledge
and information for the teachers and students in dealing with the
mathematical capacity of the students. The research and information
pertaining to the numeracy test scores will give benefits to the teachers in
having the knowledge of the students’ capacity in Mathematics and where
they have to recap with their lesson. This study will also give benefits to the
students in Mathematics by having a recap from their past lessons.

Scope and Delimitations

Roberts (2004) defined delimitations as the boundaries of the study
that are controlled principally by the researcher(Vicky, 2009). The
delimitations for this study are:
1. Only the junior high school students who are enrolled in Mahaplag
National High School will be surveyed.
2. Only their numeracy test scores, class interval and total number of
students from a section will be collected.
