FRANCOPHONE:

FRANCE

By: Mary Tysinger

FRENCH FASHION

I have always loved fashion since I was a little kid. I always loved dressing up
dolls and designing dresses on a piece of paper. France is well-known for its
fashion, so I knew I had to talk about it and just how awesome it is. France is
often referred to as the fashion capital of the world. From Marie Antoinette to
today’s modern fashion in France, we see many iconic looks throughout the
years. France’s fashion journey started during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-
1715). Louis as well as his palace’s courtiers and mistresses, were always
dressed beautifully and elegant and the people of France admired their
fashion sense. After his death and the arrival of Marie Antoinette, people
started to associate Paris as the place of fashion. In fact, the first ready-to-
wear clothing was sold in France. France even has its own fashion category:
haute couture, which Google defines as “expensive, fashionable clothes
produced by leading fashion houses.”

FRENCH TRADITIONS/HOLIDAYS

• January 6 – Epiphanie: Fête des Rois – Epiphany: Feast of the

Kings
On this day a special cake called “une galette des rois” is served
to the public. One of the cakes has a hidden “une fève” inside
(usually a porcelain figurine). Whoever finds it is named king or
queen for the day and gets to wear a paper crown. This day also
commemorates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child.
• May – Nuits des Musées – European Night of Museums
Every year on the Saturday closest to May 18th, European
museums let everyone in for free for one night and usually play
music, have games, have theatre, and films and cuisine to tempt
people to come by and join the fun.
• November 11 – Jour l’Armistice – Armistice Day (1918)

PRAYER NEEDS IN FRANCE

France is in a desperate need of God’s services with the things the country is
facing with. An increase of violent attacks have occurred in France, their
youth suicides have skyrocketed due to hopelessness and despair, and
although their economic policies have led to good public service and
infrastructure, they have suffered bureaucracy and frequent strikes. Not only
is France in need of God because of the things they’re going through but also
because there are not a lot of Christians in France. Even though half of the
population has been defined as Christians, many of those Christians haven't
even read the Gospel. Only two percent are Evangelical, and only eight
percent regularly attend church. 50 million people haven’t even been linked
to a church and 80% have never read the Bible. I hope we can pray for France
and their needs and that their problems will no longer allow the people of
France to suffer.
