IIa - 1ST – RRL

According to Jean Quintero Hall in his 1999 article, by publishing Dr. Jose P. Morga’s
Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas (Events of the Philippine Islands) annotated by Rizal
Islands, first published in 1609), Rizal’s intention was not only to provide the Filipino
people with their pre-Spanish history, but also to present them with their own authentic
culture and identity. He chose the Sucesos because he “considered it necessary to
invoke the testimony of an illustrious Spaniard who governed the destinies of the
Philippines in the beginning of her new era and witnessed the last moments of our
ancient nationality.” His annotations included clarifications and amplifications of details,
as well as refutations of statements as needed. His annotations included clarifications

when compared to other sources

IIb - ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION OF THE 1ST RRL

According to the preceding statement, Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s annotation of Morgas’ book
was It is significant to all Filipinos because, despite seeing the book as a great
testimony during the time of Spaniard colonization in our country, he included some
clarifications, details, and confirmations in his annotation. Dr. Jose P. Rizal wanted us to
be aware of our own authentic culture and identity, in addition to being informed about
early history. Dr. Jose Rizal, as we all know, is a nationalist, and he wanted us many
Filipinos to have an idea of how we should view ourselves in the midst of a growing
nationalism that eventually led to the formation of our nation through educating and
telling using stories.Dr. Jose Rizal, as we all know, is a nationalist, and he wanted us

Furthermore, according to Harry Sichrovsky (1997), Dr. Jose P. Rizal intended to

publish It was obvious to start over with the “Morga” and add lengthy annotations to it.
He wished to demonstrate, through a credible work, that the people of the Philippines
possessed a high level of culture and morality prior to the arrival of the Spaniards,
possessed mastery of a distinct handicraft art (perhaps ship construction), developed a
flourishing trade, and maintained good contact with the outside world. Knowledge of
their own history should boost his countrymen’s self-esteem encourage their political
and scientific development.

theMorga had aided many people, particularly Filipinos, in opening our eyes and minds
to what the Filipinos had before the Spaniards came and colonized us. Through his
annotations, he simply demonstrated to us how beautiful and abundant the Filipinos and
the country in which we live are. He wanted to give us a better idea and understanding
of what he knows about the past because he believes it will boost the self-confidence of
many Filipinos and will help to promote the political and scientific growth of our country,
which will help to preserve and protect what we have now.

Sucesos de las Islas, or Events of the Philippine Island, were very influential in the lives
of many Filipinos. His annotations helped everyone of us to have a better and deeper

Spaniards colonized us. Thus, Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s annotations have been an instrument
for us to depict the actual situation in the Philippines, and it has given and strengthened
our confidence, which today leads to the political and scientific growth of our nation, that
as Filipinos, we are working and joining together as a nation as one.
