SYNTHESIS PAPER ON THE TOPIC “OBSERVATION METHOD” IN TEACHING

SCIENCE

Vocabulary:
OBJECTIVITY- It should be applicable to all. It is based on facts.
EXPERIMENTATION- the testing of an idea.
HYPOTHESIS- a tentative insight that is not yet verified or tested
PRECISION- In study the data collected should be to the point and should study
the problem only.
SYSTEMATIC- - It should be step by step and not haphazard manner.
VARIFIBILITY- Our conclusions or result can be checked.
RELIABILITY- Results should remain almost same over time and space.

Topic Synthesis:

Science begins with observations of objects and events; these observations lead
to the asking of questions. Crucial to the method of science is the ability to ask the right
question and to make selected observations relevant to that question. Observations are
influenced by past experience, often involve instruments (microscopes, telescopes,
etc.), and require careful recording and description. Surprising or unexpected
observations occasionally contribute new an important knowledge.
In observation method, there is what we call experimentation. An experiment is a
series of observations carried out under special conditions. The distinction between
observation and experimentation is slight. An experiment always consists of
observations, but it is more than that be cause the observers usually interfere to some
extent with nature.
Thinking Journey is introduced as a mode of science instruction based on a
specially designed discussion between students and teachers in the context of an
imaginary journey. The paper elaborates the rationale of this mode and its specific
features: enculturation into science, analytical observation, multiple perspectives of the
subject and environment, hypothetical thinking, and active interaction between the
teacher and students. The role of the teacher is argued to be mediation of knowledge.
The method was applied for teaching the concept of gravitation and its relationship with
up-down direction. Positive results of the application suggest that the mode of teaching
is effective in teaching various student populations.
The training of pupils in observation is really storing his mind with suitable
experiences all thoroughly classified and digested. Science provided remarkable
training in observation and reasoning. Learners reason from the once established facts
and form concepts about further observed phenomena.
Hence to conclude, is not a specific method of teaching science. As a matter of
fact, almost all science begins with observation. Several hundred years were devoted to
accumulating a large amount of observed descriptions of nature. The result of this
process is an abstract mental picture which tends to see nature in an orderly man-made
pattern, which comes under the purview of science of observation. This is the substance
of which scientific theories are made. The scientist is mainly regarded as a person, who
describes nature by careful observations. The descriptions which are based on direct
observation represent correct facts.

Insights:

In my own perspective, all methods in teaching have pros and cons in

their respective manner. Specifically in observation method, it has advantage in terms
delivering a precise and accurate information since it comes from the reliable source
which is the teacher himself. It is also advantageous in terms of organization since it
follows the step by step teaching learning process which makes the students become
guided in the learning path. However, it is also on the latter’s foot in terms of not having
enough teacher-learner and learner-learner interaction which promotes active
participation and boost self esteem to each students, it is also disadvantageous in a
way that some students are not audio-visual learners when we consider the multiple
intelligences principle by Sir Howard Gardner.
