Harmful substances present in the mother’s blood are also able to cross the placenta and enter the

fetus’s blood. These include; viruses, alcohol, carbon monoxide present in cigarette smoke, street drugs,
prescription drugs, and over the counter drugs. These substance are harmful to the development of the
fetus and can result in premature birth, birth deformities and even miscarriages
