Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and
Standard
explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always
even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.
Learning Students will be able to learn the 4 times table using a counting by 4s song. Also, analyze arithmetic
Objective pattern of the 4 times table. Factors are always even and end with (4, 8, 2, 6, 0).
Materials Video: https://youtu.be/1YrR5OIj_AA. Multiplying by 4 worksheets.
The purpose of learning the 4 times table by using a skip counting song is to help them memorize
Purpose
through rhythm and learn the pattern of 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 and the numbers are always even.

Introduction
Tell them “Today, we’ll be learning the 4 times table using skip counting. Skip counting is a way of
counting forward by numbers other than 1. For example, If I count by 2s I’d say 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. For
today we’ll be counting by adding 4 each time. We’ll watch a video and sing along just like we did
for the 3 times table. Listen for the first round and then we’ll sing along”

After singing the song: “Now, looking at the 4times table factors down here, do you notice any
pattern or anything interesting? Think about it in your head” 20-30 seconds. “Now turn and talk
with a partner about what you noticed” 30secs-1min. “Raise your hand to share” Take some
answers. Piggyback if they notice the pattern or how the factors are all even. “If you noticed that all
the numbers are even, great job. Any factor multiplied by 4 will always be even.” “Another pattern I
noticed is that all the factors end with 4, 8, 2, 6, 0” Underline the numbers while counting. Ex: 4, 8,
Instruction 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 ,48.

Model
Show them counting by 4s with the rhythm. Count using my fingers, starting from the thumb. Count
up to 4x12 to match the song’s rhythm. Re-do a few times if needed. For 44 and 48 put 2 fingers
down.
“I’m going to count up to 4x12 to keep up with the rhythm. Watch my hands.”
“Another pattern I noticed is that all the factors end with 4, 8, 2, 6, 0” Underline the numbers while
counting. Ex: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44 ,48.

Guided Practice
Have them sing along with me while playing the song. Redirect them if needed. Make sure they sing
with rhythm. Have them count again without the song but with rhythm.

Check for understanding

Have students count out loud without me or the song playing. Quiz them on the rug. Give students
4s products and have them count up to it and show me how many fingers they used to count up to it
(2 problems). Also ask questions like “What is the product for 4x3” and ask individual students to
answer (2 problems). After this portion ask about the pattern.

“Let me test to see what you know. First round, I’ll say the product and you count up to it using
your fingers. I’ll give thinking time then when I signal my hand down – show them the signal- you’ll
show me with your fingers” After they show, “Now, in your head, what’s the equation?” 5-10 secs
Learning Task to think then ask 1 student to give me the equation.

After 1st round, “Second round, I’ll give the equation, you give me the product.” 10-15seconds
“With your fingers, only show me how much you counted up to.” 5seconds “Now raise your hand
for the product” – Pick on 1 student to answer and have them show their process.

“Now with raise of hands, who can remind me the patterns we noticed?” Pick students to answer for
the 2 arithmetic patterns: even, 4,8,6,2,0. “I’m going to point and you give one number of the
pattern. Like if I pick__ you give me first number 4, next person say 8 and so on. You have to listen
to what the person before said”
Independent work
Hand out the worksheets before they leave the rug. Give all the instructions first “I’ll be passing out
the worksheet. Don’t leave the rug until you get one. If I call your name come to the table: Eliana,
Kenzo, Jaliyah, Quincy, Jace”
