The #MeToo Backlash

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

a. Leanne Atwater’s response with regards to the #MeToo backlash
b. Basic awareness training mentioned by Denise Preston
c. The question “Are you seeing a backlash as sexual harassment gets more attention?”

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought she was pointing out
that this backlash as an celebratory was a celebratory of their experiences and that
through this the women would feel worst & this was their way to benefit their
experiences as a message for the men.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that in her
response she was pointing out that the women with the #MeToo backlash was a
celebratory wherein they can find other women who can relate with their problems
and to make them to not feel lonely or alone on whatever they have experienced. She
mentioned that she assumed that women were going to benefit this is because of how
other women would feel much better when they met people along the journey or pain
they are experiencing.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that this would only
focus on lecturing the people regarding sexual harassment.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that this
Basic awareness training would also focus on teaching specific skills to help with
avoiding sexual harassment and that the great thing added up is that they would
include role-playing if people participating would be comfortable.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that they were
pertaining to the backlash of women with regarding the sexual harassment, that they
would feel that this backlash would help women with their experiences in sexual
harassment.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that the
backlash they were pertaining to was from the men who are in related to sexual
harassment, either they would feel offended because the men would be generalized
with regarding to sexual harassment or they would feel offended because they already
experienced harassing and that their secrets would be exposed as men were being
talked about regarding this issue.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you want more
explanations about?
i. If the #MeToo backlash could serve as an celebratory for women would it be able
to lessen harassment and for women empowerment to have more power?
ii. How can they gather people around involved with sexual harassment to
participate in the awareness training they are planning? Wouldn’t it make the
people feel uncomfortable because the experience they have been through has
either traumatized them and that they may not appear to show up their thoughts
because they are traumatized?
iii. Would it be possible for men who are sexually harassed as well by the opposite
sex to share their experiences and for them to create their own backlash?
