SITUATION 8

Your class is planning a half-day volunteer work at a nearby animal shelter near
your campus during the coming mid-semester break. Discuss the activities that
will be carried out at the shelter. Act out the conversation that takes place in a
discussion room at the library.
(Discussion room)
Dariah: “have you guys seen what the lecturers sent in the group yesterday? They are planning
a half-day volunteer work at a nearby animal shelter near the campus during the coming mid-
semester break. Isn’t that exciting?!”
Saidatul: “yes that is very exciting! I really love animals. I used to visit a zoo all the time when I
was 6-year-old because my family knows I love it. But what animal shelter are we going to
volunteer?”
Nina: “the whole class already discuss that we can choose where we want to volunteer. There
are 2 animal shelters: dog shelters and cat shelters. I want to volunteer at a dog shelter but
sadly I am allergic to one”
Dariah: “we can volunteer at a dog shelter? I’ve never heard we can do that”
Saidatul: “yes we can but it will be tricky. If I am not mistaken, they will prepare us gloves”
Nina: “if you guys chose to volunteer at a dog shelter, you can just do activities that doesn’t
involve touching them.”
Dariah: “I think it will be convenient if we just choose to volunteer work at a cat shelter because
we can also play with the cats without boundaries”
Saidatul: “I agree. So, we all choose cat shelter, right? (Wait for nina and dariah to nod) alright,
I will inform the head we are choosing to volunteer at a cat shelter. Now what activities we can
do at the shelter?”
Nina: “I have an aunt who work at an animal shelter, and she always ask me if I am interested in
volunteering, and she told me all the activities we can do to help them. Not all activities need to
have contacts with animals because they rely on volunteers to make fliers, posting on social
media and making fundraising events.
Dariah: “Fundraising is to help animal shelter feed the animals and give them a place to be safe.
There are many ways to hold fundraising and I think I have a great idea for it. How about we
host an Art Auction?”
Saidatul: “Great Idea! we can present students’ artwork at populated place so a big amount of
people can see it and be interested. All of us have create an excellent work of art. Furthermore,
another activity we can do is clean cages and fill waters to their bowl. I personally love it
because I can play with cats while cleaning it.
Dariah: “we can play with cats to keep them happy and fill their company. It must be boring
without human interaction. I am excited because I heard they allowed volunteers to do animal
training. I cannot wait to just be surrounded by lots of cats!”
Nina: “I also found their websites and I saw that they need a skilled photographer to take
photos that truly show the animals personalities. It is one of the activities that is needed at the
shelter, so I want to try it”
Saidatul: “in addition, the most common activity at the shelter is to do laundry. We must wash
the animals bedding and towels. I am usually the one who do laundry at the dorm, so I don’t
really mind”
Dariah: “even though it is only half-day volunteer work, but it will look great on our resume
when we graduated. Part of the job as a volunteer is that you work with the animals so they can
become adoptable. So lets look forward to this volunteer work!”
